Coco Chanel (2008)
Member Rating:
Raised in a Catholic orphanage in provincial France, young Coco Chanel never imagined that her life would one day become an epic story worthy of a Lifetime original movie, full of passionate romance, and trailblazing pioneering in the world of fashion. The movie opens on 1950's Paris, as a 70 year old Coco (Shirley MacClaine), now a household name, is embarking on the second wave of her career with her first new collection in over a decade. Soon, a series of flashbacks illustrate how she got to be where she is today, both personally and professionally. Young Coco (played by Barbora Babulova) is seen working tirelessly as a seamstress, showing a unique talent for making garments more flattering and convenient despite her lowly position. Pursued by a rich man named Étienne, she soon leaves the thankless job for the comfort of life as a kept woman, but class differences eventually tear them apart. The relationship gives Coco the chance to perfect her skill as a hatmaker, however, and she leaves Etienne to open her own shop. A new romance with an Englishman named Arthur (known affectionately as "Boy") soon blossoms, and proves to be the greatest happiness and greatest tragedy of her life - but will the effects of this epic tale of love, war, and betrayal eventually prevent the burgeoning fashion maverick from fulfilling her true potential? ~ Cammila Collar, Rovi

I like this movie (2nd time I've rented it and enjoyed just as much) for the way it shows her coming back from defeat again and again. Also it shows the major contribution Coco Chanel made with her designs to bringing women's fashions out of the dark ages of ridiculous plumage, by promoting comfort and quirky style at the same time she introduced such classic staples as the women's suit and the "little black dress" which endure to this day. I think Shirley MacLaine did a fabulous job, even if she isn't French.

Good storyline of Coco Chanel's life, with enjoyable acting, esp. by Barbora Bobulova (young Coco). We liked the history of the story, the "fashions", the love story; and the strong character of overcoming defeat with perseverance. Recommended.

I love all these bio movies. The acting was a bit cheesy but the story was amazing!

Outstanding story about a determined business woman. Perhaps Shirley McLaine's best work. Coco actually dressed women as, gasp, women.

I don't know why Shirley MacClaine was nominated for this movie, it was Babulova who made this movie good. Focusing on a younger Coco and on her wardrobe line not the perfume, was excellent.

Thoroughly enjoyable. What a legend! I didn't know too much about Coco Chanel until I watched this movie. While not a biography, I believe it is fairly true to history. She was incredibly influential in changing women's fashions, and she survived and thrived in a world dominated by men. It's a long movie, but worth watching.

Very good bio movie. Not just fashion but what made CoCo the woman she was.

I loved this film. Being a milliner and seamstress put it right up my alley. Enjoy movies based on true stories.

it was too much about her love life and very non-glamorous. I thought the way it jumped around made the movie very boring. Made for tv movie
