One of the world's most celebrated fashion designers, Valentino Garavani developed an interest in design as a teenager and entered the world of haute couture in the early '50s, working under Jacques Fath, Balenciaga and Jean Desses. In 1959, Valentino opened his own house of fashion in Rome, and he soon became one of the leading lights in European design, known for his trademark shade of red and his clean, stylish lines. With Giancarlo Giammetti, who has been Valentino's business partner and significant other since 1960, the designer built an empire that remained one of the most prestigious in the fashion world until Valentino announced his retirement in the fall of 2007. Filmmaker and journalist Matt Tyrnauer, who has written about Valentino for Vanity Fair, examines the public and private lives of the fashion icon in his documentary Valentino: The Last Emperor. Granted unprecedented access to Valentino's home and office, the film offers an unusual look at his relationship with Giammetti, how his creations are made, his lavish lifestyle, and how changes in the world of haute couture have impacted him. Finally a man who understands what women want! "They want to be beautiful!" Valentino is regarded as the "King" of fashion and the empire he built is truly irreplaceable. This film is an inside look at the world of Valentino haute couture as he dreams it, as he LIVES it, and as he creates it! You will be inspired and dazzled. And oh the pugs! The pugs! ~ Do not miss the special features. You will feel like you were front row to a Valentino fashion show. Magnifique!

Valentino is truly a Fashion Icon! I have always been his fan and watched this movie twice - I will buy a copy soon! We get to see how he creates such beautiful dresses that make a woman look so feminine and special! I like how the film appreciates his partner Giancarlo and shows the pugs traveling everywhere with them! Love the 45th Anniversary Party - a unique celebration for such a great artist! One of the best fashion documentaries! Be sure to set the Language for subtitles since they speak in Italian (& French) often and you do not want to miss anything since they were so delightful to listen to behind the scenes. Highly recommend!

Great movie. Very different and also funny at times, especially re his beloved dogs. Only problem was at times reading the sub titles which were in yellow. Great special features. A man who belongs to an era that is now gone.

Quite enjoyable. It was fun to watch, though a little hard a times to understand all of the dialogue (with accent and speaking softly at times). I definitely recommend watching the bonus section 'traveling with valentino' which gives an good inside look at the inner workings of his homes.
