A young girl inadvertently unleashes a race of ancient monsters while exploring her father's 19th century mansion in this horror remake written by Guillermo del Toro and Matthew Robbins, and directed by newcomer Troy Nixey. Introverted Sally Hurst (Bailee Madison) has just moved in with her father, Alex (Guy Pearce), and his girlfriend, Kim (Katie Holmes), when she realizes that their sprawling estate holds its fair share of secrets. Descending into the depths of the house, Sally gains access to a secret lower level that has lain undisturbed for nearly a century, when the original builder vanished without a trace. When Sally accidentally opens the gateway that kept the creatures locked up tight, she realizes that in order to prevent them from destroying her family she must convince her skeptical father that monsters really exist. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This is a real terror film without all the blood and guts. Keeps you on the edge of the couch. It has great detail in the architecture and even the creepy creatures, which you actually get to see, not just shadows and music. Wonderful! Dr. Phil Spears

good remake. i remember the original television movie with Kim Darby as a kid and i always thought it was one of the scariest horror flicks of the 70's. i thought this remake would dissapoint but it turned out to be good, scary fun. i even thought Katie Holmes wasn't half bad as a actress. she did the original Kim Darby role well. this film is more spooky and eerie than out and out shocking, but it does leave you with chills when it's all over. it makes you afraid to turn out the lights for fear of little men.

As horror movies go, this is not too bad. Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce do a decent acting job as well as the little girl (Bailee Madison). It has the creepy effect, killings, and the old mansion. Did not care for the silly little gremlin-like monsters. Hey, its horror...watch only if you are a real fan.... or drinking.

Its not the worst movie I've seen but felt like the story line was weak. I happen to like Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce so that's the only reason I kept watching. Skip this movie, you'll thank me for it.

UGH!! Waste of film. I love Guillermo Del Toro, but he might have written this heavily medicated. I barely made it through this, mostly because every adult was an idiot & kept leaving the kid by herself. Don't waste your time, unless you need something to put you to sleep, or as an example of extremely poor parental judgement. C-SPAN has better plots and makes a lot more sense. SOOOO bad.
