Born Free is the heartwarming true story of a British couple who teach their pet lioness how to survive in the wilds of the African jungles. Joy and George Adamson (portrayed by real-life married couple Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers) involuntarily domesticate several lions while living in Kenya. They keep one, named Elsa, until she is fully grown, and rather than turn her over to a zoo, they decide to train her to live like a wild animal so that they can release her into her natural habitat. Geoffrey Keen is a sympathetic government official who convinces the Adamsons that they should set Elsa free to avoid being ordered to place her in captivity. The film, based on Joy Adamson's book, is poignant and emotional without ever becoming banal or overly sentimental. The title song and film score both won Academy Awards. ~ Don Kaye, Rovi

This movie is just as good as when I first watched it as a young child in the early 70's. It is definitely a good family movie.

From a practical point of view, this film demonstrates how domesticating a wild animal is bad for all concerned. But in the innocence of the time when it occurred, it's just a pleasure to watch the bonding between living spirits no matter what their species. Somewhat dated but it ages well.

This is a beautiful story about the friendship betwen a lyon and a familly. Photograpy is remarkable! Don't miss this one. Good for everyone in the family. I wish they would make more films like this one.

If you like lions, especially lion cubs, you will enjoy this movie. It is a bit slow and children will probably tire of the slow, adult pace of it but it is filmed in Africa and is a true story.

I liked this movie but I wish that it wasn't portrayed so easily and lightheartedly to shoot a lion or any wild animal. This movie told a beautiful true story about a lioness that had been domesticated because her parents had been shot. This lion can not continue to live with her human companions because her wild tendencies and large size bring about trouble to a small village. Sadly, we should all know that once an animal has been close to humans, we put them at risk of their lives and of ours. Therefore we can not expect that they will begin to fear us as wild animals should. I feel that this movie, lighthearted as it is made, has a sadness that we can not ignore.

I read the book nearly 30 years ago as a child. The movie awakened all the imagery and feelings of the book. It is a very well made motion picture of a true story.

My children completely enjoyed this movie and watched it over and over! They loved the story and the realism. I enjoyed it as well. I remember loving this movie as a child and that is the main reason I rented it for my children. It was everything I remember.

An excellent film from the 60's, when Hollywood could make a film that was heartfelt without being corny, made a useful life-lesson point, evoked the wonders of the wild country, and told a story that interested the audience without foul language, explosions, explicit intercourse and violence. Well worth the time with the family to see.

An instant classic from Pixar. The animation is so good, it feels like the lions are actually real. Fantastic.
