The Homecoming (1971)
Member Rating:
This made-for-TV drama, based on the book by Earl Hamner Jr., was the basis for the popular long-running television series The Waltons. In this opening installment, the Waltons, led by matriarch Olivia Walton (Patricia Neal), spend an anxious 1933 Christmas Eve together as they await the arrival of their father during a snowstorm. The film won the Golden Globe Award for "Best TV-Movie" that year, and Neal won the "Best Actress" award for her performance. ~ Bernadette McCallion, Rovi

I recommend this warm and loving movie to be watched by the whole family. I always watch it for Christmas. This wonderful movie was made before all the political correction changed the color and truthfulness of movies.

This is one of my favorite Christmas movies of all time - reminds me of a different time, when family meant more!

I am a fan of the series, like other viewers Ms. Neal is not my favorite Olivia nor is Mr.Bergen as the Grandfather. I love the tightness of the family, and the love that is overflowing. This and the series is a fixture in my household.,I like to show my children was decent shows are about and how the shows reflect the true feelings during periods of time in our history. This series doenst go out of its way to be poltically correct, its more truthful.

This is great. It is interesting to note that ALL the Walton children were the same in this movie as were cast in the TV show. Only one of the main adults was the same though (Ellen Corby as Grandma)

I grew up during the 70s and remember "The Homecoming" well. This is a winner for families who worry about "Bad" content. A real family story that will leave you moved.

My favorite Christmas show. If I don't watch it on Christmas Eve, it doesn't seem like Chirsmas. So much like my childhood days. It's a lovely, moving picture!

THe kids are cute but the parents are not the same as the Waltons and the mom's hoarse voice and sort of drunken personality ruins the movie. We thought that ruined the movie anyway. It is a nice family movie if you can look past that. Thank goodness the mother and father on THe Waltons series are different because The Waltons series is great!
