Gary Grimes stars in this revisionist western as Ben Mockridge, a 16-year-old boy who has long dreamed of living the life of a cowboy. Wanting adventure, he persuades Frank Culpepper (Billy Green Bush) to take him along on a cattle drive, and Ben learns the hard way just how lonesome, exhausting, and violent the life of a cowhand can be. As one of the men on the drive puts it, "Being a cowboy is what you do when you can't do anything else." Hal Needham, who would later direct a string of successful films starring Burt Reynolds, can be spotted in a small role as Burgess, one of the cowboys. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

I first saw this movie when I was stationed in Viet Nam and had totally forgot about it until I was watching Lonsome Dove and it reminded me of the movie. Funny how the mind works. I enjoyed it as much now as i did back then. Great movie.

It may not be "Lonesome Dove" ,but I've always liked this small , but realistic film, with believable, grungy characters. It has style ,grit, and rings true most of the time.

The movie was ok, it had some unanswered questions, but it did show the way things probably were at that day and time. It was "a cowboy" movie and meant for "men".

My husband and I found that the movie just didn't keep our interest. It just wasn't what we had expected as far as western movies go.

As best I can figure every character actor in LA must have been available because they all show up here on the cattle drive. Unfortunately this is a pretty lame flick, not what most western film fans are looking for.
