Carnera: The Walking Mountain (2008) Reviews

Carnera: The Walking Mountain (2008)
Member Rating:
Standing six and a half feet tall and weighing 265 pounds, Primo Carnera was one of the most formidable opponents in the history of heavyweight boxing, and in 1933, after becoming heavyweight champion of his native Italy, we went on to defeat Jack Sharkey in New York to become heavyweight champ of the world. Carnera's true story comes to life in this screen biography, with "the Ambling Alp" played by actor Andrea Iaia. Growing up in poverty, Carnera wanted to use his size and strength to make something of himself, and after joining a circus and becoming a strongman, he was spotted by a pair of fight promoters, Leon See (F. Murray Abraham) and Lou Soresi (Burt Young), who were convinced he had the talent to become a professional boxer. In time, with the help of trainer Maurice Eudeline (Paolo Seganti), Carnera rose to the top of the fight game and became an international sports star. However, Carnera's business savvy didn't match his physical power; he discovered in his later years that See and Soresi had stolen most of his winnings, and the once-proud champion was forced to join the then-unglamorous world of professional wrestling. Originally produced for Italian television, Carnera: The Walking Mountain enjoyed a theatrical release in Europe before its broadcast premiere. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Just watched this film. Amazing boxing film! Better than Rocky and a true story!

This was a good movie about an Italian boxer from the 1920-30s who was huge and pride of the Italian people. But, according to history this movie wasn't too accurate. Carnera was considered by many to be involve in organize crime and many of his fights were set up.

I suppose if I was related to Carnera, or Italian and needed something to boost my ethnic pride, that I would've enjoyed this film more. It was a somewhat pleasant, warm and fuzzy story that skirted over too many other details and fights that would've made a more interesting script. The ending was abrupt and unsatisfying. Perhaps this was due to it's original made for TV limitations. Comparing it to Rocky is a real stretch. There is none of the excitement and no where near the climatic ending that Rocky had. The acting was just OK. One can only assume that for Burt Young and F Murray Abraham that this was just a paycheck. The best acting had to have been by the producers for landing them. Carnera came from nothing, worked hard for his shot, got screwed over by management, loved his wife, lived a long life and put his kids through college. That's the movie in a nutshell. There are many other boxing movies that are a lot better than this one.

This was a so-so movie. Not particularly well-written or acted. The material is compressed into the 90 minute format which reduces this man's life to a series of mini-scenes--some of which lack transition. The boxing scenes are not well done either. Having said all of that, the story of Carnera's life is interesting and worth seeing.
