The Adventures of Bullwhip Griffin (1966)

This rambunctious Disney comedy was based on the novel By the Great Horn Spoon by Sid Fleischman. Roddy McDowall plays Griffin, the very proper butler of Bostonian Bryan Russell. When Russell runs off to California during the 1849 gold rush, Griffin dutifully tags along. Master and butler team up with Shakespearean actor Richard Haydn, who owns a treasure map. Crooked judge Karl Malden (a master of many disguises), pilfers the map once Our Heroes reach San Francisco. While endeavoring to retrieve the valuable parchment, Griffin has any number of adventures, ranging from a bout of fisticuffs with ox-like Mike Mazurki to a romance with Russell's sister Suzanne Pleshette, a former debutante turned saloon singer. If Adventures of Bullwhip Griffin resembles an animated cartoon at times, credit should go to veteran Disney animator Ward Kimball, who provided the spirited cartoon transitions between scenes. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

It is nice to have a movie that children of 7-yrs and 11-yrs can enjoy along with parents and grandparents without worry about content. We were all laughing at the slapstick humor and always looking to the positive side of life.

My 5 & 8 year old boys loved this movie. Lots of slap-stick comedy, but nothing overly violet that makes them both uncomfortable. A movie entertaining enough for an adult to sit through more than once!

This VERY tongue-in-cheek western/adventure/comedy did poorly at the box office when it was first released, because it was so different from the usual Disney film. Griffin, a very upright and proper butler in Boston, ends up in the California Goldfields and, after a number of adventures, including one of the funniest boxing matches on record, ends up with the girl and a small fortune. It's poor initial release is surprising because it is a lot of fun.

My wife and I had a good time watching this movie. It was a fun little story that people of all ages will enjoy.

my granddaughtter read this book and told me that the movie is nothing like the book. the boys name is really Jack Flagg and Griffin is actually Praiseworthy. He does not have a love affair with a sisiter of jacks but mereally his aunt arabella. Jacks sisiters are little children. And the "Judge" is actually named Cut-Eye Higgins! I would see this movie again but bear in mind it is not all true but it is a movie that retells the fight just right. I think it was better to see the fight than to have to read it. I would get this movie!

This movie was funny in a ridiculous kind of way but it took too long to get to the funny stuff. The cartoon breaks were very cheaply done. Suzanne Pleschette was great to look at. Roddy was funny. Goofy movie.

Better for children than adults.

A simple, farcical, light-hearted comedy. Held the attention of the adults and 10 yr old. McDowall and the lovely Suzanne Pleshette brought back great memories. It was odd, but fun, to see such a traditional "heavy" like Carl Malden take a turn at melodramatic comedy.

This movie is one of the best family movies we've ever seen, and we've seen it many times. It's very funny, and incorporates the western theme, as well. Clean and very funny.
