This story is taken from the real-life marriage of two people in the early 1960s. Helen North (Lucille Ball) is a widow with eight children who falls in love with Naval officer Frank Beardsley (Henry Fonda), a widower with ten children of his own. The two marry as comedy ensues from the sheer numbers and diverse age groups of the offspring. Narration is used in the first half of the film to help set the stage for the impending nuptials. Van Johnson is the mutual friend who brings the couple together. Tom Bosley plays the harried doctor who makes a house call and finds almost two dozen patients under one roof. The newlyweds are soon off to the hospital when Helen becomes pregnant with the couple's first child in this amusing family comedy. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

I love this movie still after seeing it year after year. Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda are classic actors.

Much, much better than the remake. Rented this movie to share with my 7 year old who insisted in watching the remake first. After seeing that one, I had to share this one with her. She fell in love with the classic and changed her mind very quickly about the remake. It was a wonderful way to share family quality time.

This movie is still very funny and entertaning. A better treat is to watch both this movie and the remake.

I love Lucille Ball. She is still so stinkin' funny after all these years! Henry Fonda is a bonus in this one. Good family show.

I love this movie! More than a big family marries another big family, it restates the true message of love through the kids chaos and 1 AM fevers, in spite of all the messiness that is life, true commitment and nurturing is what love is about. Wish there were more movies being made like this...something to affirm and support families. The humor is natural and not contrived. Yes real life can be hilarious!

I am in my fifties, so Lucy has always been a favorite of mine. This movie makes me feel nostalgic, and is also funny in a gentle way compared with comedies of the present. I watch it periodically and enjoy it every time.

If your Old School like me; You're going to enjoy this movie a lot more than the remake! I like Dennis Quaid, so I gave the remake a chance, but just like any remake, they come up short. For some reason, the originals are always much better! After a few years, I like to watch this version over again and its still funny! With legends like Henry Fonda, Lucille Ball, and Van Johnson was good too! I gave this movie five stars and gave the remake two and a half stars.
