Barbra Streisand's directorial debut, Yentl, is a musical adaptation of a story by the beloved Jewish writer Isaac Bashevis Singer. Yentl (Streisand) is a young woman who wants nothing more than to study religious scripture. She is denied that possibility because she is a woman. She moves, passes herself off as a male named Anshel, and then begins her studies. She becomes close to fellow student Avigdor (Mandy Patinkin), eventually falling in love with him, although she can not reveal her true self as she would then be expelled. Avigdor is in love with Hadass (Amy Irving), but religious law forbids him from marrying her. Avigdor attempts to fix Anshel up with Hadass, leading to Hadass falling in love with Anshel. Yentl received four Academy Award nominations, including two Best Song nods. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

This is a great movie. The story is interesting. The acting is wonderful. The music is great. I have seen this movie several times. I fell in love with Mandy Patinkin in this movie. Barbara is amazing as usual. It was so good that I forgot about the actors and really cared about the characters.

For the record (because I was confused too) The first disc has the movie (2 versions, the theatrical version and a version with extra scenes) and the second disc has extras and no movie.

In my opinion one of Streisand's finest efforts. Not only does the love story unfold at the perfect pace, the uniqueness of the story between Avigdor (Patinkin), Hadass (Irving) and Anschel/Yentl (Streisand) is very interesting to watch. The attention to detail is not surprising given Barbra's penchant for perfection. It's put to perfect use here in everything from selection of cinematography - which is gorgeous - to the china used on the tables. The music also speaks for itself as each song assists in telling the story and not just reiterating what you've seen. A fantastic film often underrated but very much worth the watching. Highly recommended.

As with every Streisand movie I have ever seen, I can't say enough that would elevate this movie to the highest standards it deserves. Just wonderful!

Why this film wasn't honored with an Ocar is a mystery. The only explanation is envy. Streisand's artistic genius resonates in this story of a young, intellectually-gifted woman who is stuck in a patriarcal, religious-based society that doesn't allow her to be who she was meant to be. The intervening love story and the beautiful cinematography make her tale all the more fascinating.

It's hard to rate the movie because if you look at the disc it's self it's disc 2 not 1. Besure this is corrected before it goes out. Betty L

Obviously need more copies. Its status has been 'Very Long Wait' ever since release day.

Is disc-2 extras only? Is the movie on both discs? I'd like to know so I can make a better informed decision as to whether or not I want just the movie, or a 2nd disc with extras on it.

This is probably the best vehicle to showcase the breadth of Barbra's voice and talent. Its haunting, magical, and simply breathtaking with emotion. Yentl shows why Barbra is a star. Amy Irving is divine and Mandy Patankin plays his role so well, that I followed his career every since I saw this movie. Rent it - you won't regret it.
