In the tradition of This Is Spinal Tap, producer/ director/ star Tim Robbins' Bob Roberts is a satire disguised as a documentary. Robbins plays the titular Roberts, a wealthy, well-connected young man running for a senatorial seat in Pennsylvania. On the surface, Roberts is an ingratiating glad-hander, a sincere believer in the restoration of such intangibles as national pride, family values, etc. But the longer Roberts is followed about by documentary filmmaker Brian Murray, the more we become aware that the candidate is a textbook case of cynicism and contempt. Only Giancarlo Esposito, a reporter for an underground newspaper, is willing to dig beneath Roberts' veneer--a habit that leads to the film's ironic conclusion. Several well-known actors make cameo appearances as TV commentators, notably Tim Robbins' longtime partner Susan Sarandon. Bob Roberts started out as a Tim Robbins-directed short subject for the TV series Saturday Night Live, then was expanded into a $4 million feature. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This movie was compared to This is Spinal Tap; believing that was my first mistake. My second mistake was watching it for the first hour, hoping that it would be funny. Save the space on your queue; 1 star is an over estimate for this incredibly boring, non-innovative film.

Tim Robbins wrote and directed this movie. I guess that should have been a clue for me for what to expect. Basically if you are a liberal in this movie you are concerned, intelligent, sincere, humane, honest, and wanting to do good for you fellow man. If you are conservative you are the opposite of all of those things. Then on top of that you are a mind numb Christian to boot. I found the stereotyping to be really offensive and it detracted from a plot that was done second order to whatever political message Robbins was trying to accomplish. No doubt if you are a liberal you will find this movie very satisfying. I would not have seen this if I could have read a review like the one I am writing.

Scary in its perception of our times. This was about the 1990 election but could just as easily be about 2012. Gripping and I loved the documentary-esque feel to it. Definitely worth watching!

Tim Robbins shows his wonderful acting abilty by portraying a politician with views completely opposed to his own. The story itself was slow, but Robbins made me truly hate his character.

I do have to laugh at conservatives who are offended by this film. Yes, I am a political liberal, and yes, I find this film to be right on target. Though keeping an open mind and caring about other people are not popular concepts, they are at the foundation of what makes this a great country. If you agree, then you will enjoy this film. If you disagree, you should watch this film anyway! A great film IF you are a political junkie. 5-STARS

This film is a masterpiece. In the tradition of FACE IN THE CROWD, THE CANDIDATE, and ELMER GANTRY, this is a trenchant satire of the political process. Gore Vidal gives an unforgettable performance as an actor in this film. The synopsis that compares it to SPINAL TAP is referring to the mockumentary, verite style, which has now become familiar.

I wanted to like this one, but it is a flop - not that funny. Some of the folk songs were amusing but it grew tiresome.

Not a movie for fervent conservatives, but if you've got an open mind, or if you're a fan of Tim Robbins, you'll be a fan of this movie. It IS HILARIOUS, but it's satire, and I guess some people don't get it. Better than Primary Colors, it's a political satire of the winner-take-all, ruthless, fool-them-all style of politics that has become common in America today. My favorite political movie.

Unfortunately, Robbins really puts his finger on the pulse of the right-wing religious conspiracy. They don't want to leave us alone. They want to control us. Comedy? Not so much. Interesting? Definitely, if you have any sense of decency and eqalitarianism. Rent it? Only if you have been paying attention to what's being done to America.
