The Boatniks (1970)
Member Rating:
The inept Ensign Garland (Robert Morse) battles a trio of jewel thieves in this Walt Disney comedy. Garland starts by spilling paint on the lovely Kate Fairchild (Stephanie Powers). Harry (Phil Silvers), Max (Norman Fell) and Charlie (Mickey Shaughnessy) try to recover the jewels accidentally dumped by Garland into a picnic basket. Garland's superior is Commander Taylor (Don Ameche), who hounds the harried ensign for being a constant bumbler. Jason Bennett (Wally Cox) is the playboy who has replaced his yacht engine with a wine cellar. Character actors Joe E. Ross and Al Lewis witness the sight gags and react to the seafaring shenanigans. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

When was the last time you didn't have to explain potty-humor, innuendos, or other 'adult' themes to your kids when watching a 'kids' movie? This in a fun, silly movie, with inept bad guys, a good hearted guy who get the girl, an uncomplicated plot and the coolest toy imaginable - your own two seat submarine! I loved this movie as a child, and my kids liked it today.

Take this movie for what it is, a Disney live action movie produced during the Dark Age of Disney, between the time Uncle Walt died and Eisner and his crew took power. Its actually an enjoyable way to pass a couple of hours. Phil Silvers is actually close to being funny. If they had hired Fred Gwynne, they could have had a Car 54 Where are You cast reuinion. If you are looking for high quality film making and sophisticated entertainment, don't rent this movie. If you want an enjoyable piece of mind candy, this movie works well for this purpose.

ok this was filmed in Newport Beach (harbor) and its a fun film. It shows the harbor during that area (great backdrop) and the film is lighthearted and fun matching the environment it was shot in. My 3 year old son and I loved it.

I was disappointed by this film. It's not very funny, and for Disney to include many scenes from a drunken party vessel with bikini clad women - come on! Also, the development of the relationship between the Ensign and the female lead was very shallow. Don't waste your time on this movie.
