Das Boot ist voll (1981)
Member Rating:
Based on fact, The Boat is Full is set during World War II. A group of Jewish refugees desperately attempt to escape to the safety of neutral Switzerland. The problem: too many refugees, and too little room in the boat commissioned for the trip. Director Markus Imhoof is neither a polished nor a subtle filmmaker, nor is the acting of the highest calibre. This hardly matters: the intensity and sincerity of everyone involved in The Boat is Full compensates for any and all production crudities. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The characters in this movie seemed so realistic. I really felt as if I was a fly on the wall in the back country in Switzerland. Even though I speak fluent German, I had to really pay attention to some of the subtitles, as this Swiss accent can be hard to understand. The movie left you feeling incredibly sad and also angry at the Swiss for that matter. If you don't like subtitles and not a lot of action, then this movie isn't for you.

We must never, ever forget. This movie is a good reminder of a terrible time in human history.

Rough character development kept the movie from fulfilling what would otherwise be a very promising them - that of Jewish refuges trying to escape. For example, the owner of the inn where the refuges seek shelter calls the police but then 2 mins later is trying to help the refuges evade detection. This un-explained and poorly developed change of character reflects poor script writing and even poorer directing. Large gaps in btw scene changes as well.

The theme has been done many many times and this one concentrates on a select few. It is worth watching but if you haven't seen Shindler's List I would recommend that one as well as many other,...It's hard for me to say I liked any of these movies as the theme was a horrible thing for anyone to have to go through but they are a serious look into the tragedy. This one is no exception and was really disappointed at the end reading the follow-up of the true accounts of the charecters. This is a subtitled movie which is fine for me as foreign films do have a redeeming quality!

Not a bad movie. It was a depiction of how terribly the Jewis people were treated and what they had to do to survive and try to avoid the concentration camps.

Being someone who enjoys learning about WWII I was looking forward to seeing this movie. I was disappointed when I discovered the entire movie was in a foreign language and there was no way to select an English audio track. I did not have time to read it. I'll be looking forward to this being rereleased with an English audio track. I should have read the description more carefully.

I have seen many movies/documentaries regarding WWII and this one just doesn't match up to many of them. Don't bother.
