Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988)
Member Rating:
Though the kinky characters and aberrant social behavior common to the works of Spanish director Pedro Almodovar are very evident in his Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, the film is at heart a door-slamming farce in the grand tradition. The tiny apartment of pregnant actress Carmen Maura is the "Grand Central Station" setpiece for this dizzying tale. Distraught over her recent breakup with her lover, Carmen prepares to overdose on sleeping pills, which she blends into a gazpacho so they'll go down easier. She is diverted from her suicide by her best friend Maria Barranco, a fugitive from justice (her boy friend is a Shi'Ite terrorist) who needs a place to stay. Later, when Carmen's apartment is empty, her ex-lover's grown son (Antonio Banderas) comes to the apartment with his fiance (Rossy de Palma) in answer to Carmen's "room to let" newspaper ad. The wife inadvertently ingests Carmen's "pill sauce," and as she blissfully snoozes, the husband inaugurates an affair with Carmen's friend Barranco. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The first time I saw this movie was during its original run in art house theatres years ago. I laughed so hard I cried! Going beyond the sexual content, this movie was definitely a camp, a farce, like old black and white movies (ala Groucho Marx or Laurel & Hardy), complete with folks coming and going from the same room seconds behind each other with ridiculously funny dialogue. It was absolutely hilarious! This was my introduction to Almodovar and it sold me on him. BTW it was not a male-bashing film, just an extremely entertaining story about one over-the-top female character's reaction to a break up.

One of Amodovar's funniest movies. He does understand women and how to portray their emotions. I loved it. maj

Still as outrageous and funny as ever--not for the prudish among us --

This is an excellent movie! Almodovar has an amazing way of capturing the psychology of women - this movie is one of the best demonstrations of this and is at the same time extremely funny and terribly original.

Great fun, as Almodovar continues to expand his visual sophistication from film to film, and his ability to create a subtle mix of the campy, the surreal, and real emotion grows ever stronger. Full of odd and silly twists and turns, and populated by absurd but still very human characters. This is also a film with a positive theme - the amazing strength and resilience of women. So why not a 5 star rating for a film a lot of smart people consider a flat-out masterpiece?. Maybe I need to re-see it a third time, but on recent round of working my way through all of Almodovar's films it felt paper thin. I enjoyed it, but it did not feel like a film that would stick with me, or effect me. In some ways, I found the far more flawed Matador™ has more unforgettable images, moments and challenging power.
