Sidney Lumet's The Wiz is the film version of the popular Broadway musical that retells the events of L. Frank Baum's classic novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz through the eyes of a young African-American kindergarten teacher who's "never been below 125th Street." Leaving a large family dinner to chase her dog into a snowstorm, Dorothy (Diana Ross) is swept up by a cyclone and transplanted to the land of Oz -- which looks suspiciously like a skewed version of the run-down Manhattan of the late '70s. Landing on top of the Wicked Witch of the East, the puzzled Dorothy is greeted by munchkins who peel themselves from a graffiti mural and sing to her about the Wiz (Richard Pryor), a powerful wizard living in Emerald City who can help her get home. On her journey down the yellow brick road, she encounters a garbage-stuffed scarecrow (Michael Jackson) in a junkyard, a broken-down tin man (Nipsey Russell) caught in the decay of an old amusement park, and a cowardly lion (Ted Ross) posing as a stone statue outside a museum. The quartet tangles with a subway station that comes to life, a poppy den, and a gaggle of motorcycle henchman on their way to the Wiz -- who orders them to kill the Wicked Witch of the West (a sweatshop tyrant) before he will grant them their wishes. The Wiz has about double the large-scale production numbers of The Wizard of Oz (1939), with songs written and composed by Charlie Smalls. ~ Derek Armstrong, Rovi

It was a joy to watch this beloved musical from my childhood, with my little girls. It was long for them, but they loved it! Wonderful!

My friends and family think I'm weird, but I have loved this movie since I was a child. I'm dating myself, but I remember seeing this when it came out in the theatre. Who cares that Dorothy is 30 years old? The songs, the dancing and the vision of this movie is what makes it awesome. C'mon... the Munchkins are GRAFFITI & the Land of Oz is the World Trade Center!!! LOL I love it!

THE MOVIE WAS VERY GOOD BUT I RECEIVED A VERY BAD COPY. IT WAS SCRATCHED AND SKIPPED AND PAUSED THROUGH THE ENTIRE MOVIE. MY DAUGHTER WANTED TO SEE IT SO BAD THAT SHE WATCHED IT ANYWAY BUT I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE QUALITY OF THE COPY I RECEIVED.

This is an older movie. I really like the regular classic Wizard of Oz much better. It was interesting seeing Michael Jackson in the movie. He played a good scarecrow. It was an O.k. musical but can't beat the traditional one.

I REALLY wanted to like this movie. It has stars in it that I love, and it is a remake of a movie that I love, and it has great possibilities. But it's boring. The music was truly awful. Once or twice for a second, they showed Michael dancing. The song he sang was boring and lifeless. I would like to see THIS movie redone, but by someone who can compose well and choreographed by a great dancer, and scripted by a talented writer. What a shame.

I bought this DVD and it's a great movie for it's time and now. the make-up and costume are so unique and over the top, and with the music it made it perfect. I would have to say that the oringal singer for dorthey (Dennis Williams) should have been starring in this role...not only because she looked the age, but she had the strong voice that belonged to most of the songs. Not say Diana Ross didn't do a good job...it's that just it a good Job. Dennis would have been GREAT!

A timeless classic. Just as valid as the original Wizard of Oz. I rented this for my grand daughter of 5 years old and she loved it. And she will be able to have her children watch it in years to come. That's what makes a classic I think.

One of my favorite musicals. It's so bright and vivd, and the songs are great. It would hve been 5 starts, except for Diana Ross. She's far too old for the part, and her voice is just not right for songs. The original Broadway Doroth, Stephanie Williams, was the right age and had the better voice- but diana was dating Berry Gordy so she got the part.
