Will Penny (1967) Reviews

Will Penny (1967)
Member Rating:
Rambling along at its own measured pace, Will Penny is a vivid western character study, completely dominated by the rapport between stars (Charlton Heston) and (Joan Hackett). Heston plays Will Penny, an aging and impoverished cowboy. With his cohorts Blue (Lee Majors) and Dutchy (Anthony Zerbe), the trio sets out to find employment before winter sets in. Their job search is interrupted by the sudden appearance of Preacher Quint, a vicious Bible-thumping bandit (Donald Pleasance) and his moronic, sadistic sons. Dutchy gets wounded in the fight and Blue stays with him in a small town nearby to nurse him back to health. Will gets a job on a ranch, and though he is supposed to keep squatters off the land, he can't kick out Catherine (Joan Hackett) and her little son (Jon Gries). She herself is en route to join her husband, an Oregon farmer. Despite her wedding vows, Catherine finds herself drawn to Penny -- who makes no unwarranted move towards the woman, but is equally attracted to her. Then the murderous Quint and his sons reappear to exact their revenge. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I'm afraid that I remembered this as a much better movie. It didn't hold-up to todays movies.

A fairly predictable western movie but who can not enjoy a movie with Charlton Heston? An enjoyable movie to watch and not have to think too much about plot.

I'm a Charlton Heston fan and was looking forward to seeing this as I had never seen it before. Albeit with a good cast and a decent production; the script is slow and hard to follow. I lost interest and ejected the disk after 10 minutes. With better writer(s) behind this script: it could have been a great Western as it is -- it's only worthy of a Saturday Television matinee. The kind you'd watch while in a waiting room. Thinking the whole time, Not one of Heston's best, for sure. My Grade: C- Marc L., Seattle, WA

If you are looking for a John Wayne style Western, this is not it. "Westerns" from after the 60's tend to loose that chivalrous portrayal common in earlier ones and sometimes come across as just down right depressing, although -probably more realistic.

I don't know what was worse - the acting in this movie or the fake blood that looked like red paint! The story felt like it was cobbled together from several other westerns and the actors bumbled through trying to make something of their roles. Not worth watching!
