Director David Lynch crafted this hallucinogenic mystery-thriller that probes beneath the cheerful surface of suburban America to discover sadomasochistic violence, corruption, drug abuse, crime and perversion. Kyle Maclachlan stars as Jeffrey Beaumont, a square-jawed young man who returns to his picture-perfect small town when his father suffers a stroke. Walking through a field near his home, Jeff discovers a severed human ear, which he immediately brings to the police. Their disinterest sparks Jeff's curiosity, and he is soon drawn into a dangerous drama that's being played out by a lounge singer, Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini) and the ether-addicted Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper). The sociopathic Booth has kidnapped Dorothy's young son and is using the child as a bargaining chip to repeatedly beat, humiliate and rape Dorothy. Though he's drawn to the virginal, wholesome Sandy Williams (Laura Dern), Jeff is also aroused by Dorothy and in trying to aid her, he discovers his dark side. As the film nears its conclusion, our hero learns that many more indivduals are tacitly involved with Frank, including a suave, lip-synching singer, Ben (Dean Stockwell), who is minding the kidnapped boy. Director Lynch explored many similar themes of the "disease" lying just under the surface of the small town, all-American façade in his later television series Twin Peaks (1990-91). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

How this movie ever got made is a mystery. David Lynch claims he worked on the screenplay for several years, AND THIS IS THE BEST HE COULD DO. There is no recognizable plot and no interesting characters. Unless your a big Dennis Hopper fan, which I am, this movie is a waste of time.

Very strange and sadistic movie, it will not leave you feeling good. Hopper plays a great psycho, and Rossellini is ... well, wow did she play her part well. There is not one sane person in this movie, and should probably be rated X, lots of nudity and profanity. Good movie though, very well done for what it is.

I agree a kind of weird movie. Moves along at first kind of slow, but picks up and keeps your interest. Realize that this is a 26 year old movie, don't expect a lot from the acting and characters portrayals.

Still has the capacity to shock, although I find that mostly relates to the abuse towards Rosselini's character than to the swearing or violence. Today, the heavy-handed use of the f-word actually plays for laughs. Plots about the seedy underbelly of suburbia are now a bit of a cliche, but Blue Velvet is more psychological than social. Blue Velvet An "art" film, even if not a dreary European one, is not for everyone.

one of the better movies lynch has ever made. truly atmospheric. genuine scary moments. it felt oppressive, like a bad dream we can't awaken from, and -- at the same time -- a bit paranoid and nightmarish in the sense that things were rolling in the wrong direction but we are unable to stop things from happening. really liked this story and the strong characters. dennis hopper (God rest his soul) created a truly bad guy who was scary to watch. kyle was in way over his head. laura acted truly innocent, and isabella is sick and a victim, too. great stuff!

I wouldn't call this movie a waste of time, but it's definitley for people who get a kick out of all things strange. It was good for a few laughs, especially the overdramatic acting. The movie ended and I was speechless....not sure whether that's good or bad.
