White Hunter, Black Heart (1990)
Member Rating:
Something of a sleeper in its 1990 release, White Hunter, Black Heart is one of Clint Eastwood's most engaging films. It is based on Peter Vietel's novel about the location shoot of John Huston's immortal The African Queen. But the focus is never on Bogie and Hepburn. Egomaniacal director John Wilson (Eastwood) is far more interested in killing an elephant than in making a movie. His old friend and scriptwriter Pete Verrill (Jeff Fahey) and his producer, Paul Landers (George Dzundza), are on hand to try and talk him down from this pursuit. Eastwood's verbose, outlandish performance will be particularly remarkable to fans who tend to think of him as the soft-spoken tough guy. ~ John Voorhees, Rovi

It is hard to watch Eastwood at first but then you get comfortable with his character. It is different but in a good way. Humorous at times and other times it is down right serious. I liked this movie it was worth watching.

Eastwood's acting is superb in this film and it's fun to guess the fictional characters against the real personalities depicted throughout (i.e., Katherine Hepburn, John Huston, Bogie, Lauren Bacall). Ending is premature, however, leaving much in question.

Interesting film about the behind-the-scenes story of one of my favorite movies, "The African Queen". Good performances especially from Eastwood. Worth watching

an interesting movie. Very dialog driven. Most lines I've seen Clint do in any two movies combined. Has it's funny part, but at times hard to follow. One of those few times where Clint was not the best actor for the part, and I'm a BIG Clint Eastwood fan!

There was something about Eastwood's performance...the too practiced monologues that were distrating. It seemed unrealistic. But over all I liked the movie. It was interesting to see how John Huston operated.

The only interesting thing about this movie, is it's a behind the scenes look at one of the greatest movies ever made, but the downside is it makes the movie lose intergrity. Not to mention it's very boring.

Not a Clint Eastwood movie; If that's what you want to see, don't bother. He was dreadful as John Huston, who was a remarkable man. Not to say that Clint, isn't; this just wasn't cast well. This is a totally "B" movie. Don't expect more. The only reason to force yourself to watch this (and we couldn't) is to understand the history of the making of African Queen, but we just couldn't make ourselves. Suggestion: Blockbuster pulls this one.
