Where the Day Takes You (1992)
Member Rating:
Marc Rocco's gritty drama Where the Day Takes You stars Dermot Mulroney as King, a street-smart hustler who acts as a father figure to a motley collection of young runaways. Among the people in his sphere are the young self-destructive drug addict Greg (Sean Astin), self-hating gay prostitute Little J (Balthazar Getty), and newcomer Heather (Lara Flynn Boyle). The film is structured as a series of flashbacks triggered by King's conversations with a prison psychologist (Laura San Giacomo). Included in the impressive cast are such soon-to-be-famous names as Will Smith and Ricki Lake, and the already established Kyle MacLachlan, Christian Slater, and Alyssa Milano. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

I love LOVE this movie. The ending is what really grabs you and makes you think. I work at a group home for delinquents and have shown this film in anti-drug classes. It is a good group discussion for the teens.

I think I would have taken the characters more seriously if all the actors weren't so well known. There is a great story going on here, though. While it isn't one of the gritty types of movies that will stick with you and cause you to lose sleep like Requiem for a Dream, Kids, or Gardens of the night, its still effective with it's message.

This is one of the best movies EVER made. I can't believe that more people don't know about this movie. My Mom made me watch it when I was 15 and it is TERRIFYING! Now as an adult I see the impact this movie could have. I highly recommend it to ANYONE!

The start of the movie dragged a bit, but was valid to the movie. Just have to patient for a gripping trip through the lives of the less fortune children of the streets. Unhappiness, violence, love and caring.

Some now-famous actors in a cautionary tale about runaways turns out to be an extended ad for Covenant House.

Great title, lots of stars, with much talent, but the documentry style of this film is too much like the dime a dozen reality shows on TV today. Not entertaining as far as I'm concerned.

This movie is one of the best I have ever seen. It includes an all star cast and the story line is awesome.

See what can happen to a loose band of teen runaways faced with daily danger on the streets. Main character runs away from small-town rural Nevada to Las Vegas, where he plans to find a job and quickly earn enough $$ to travel to Charlotte, NC and become a NASCAR professional. He quickly finds that folks will rob you, seduce you, etc. and he gets street-smart quickly. To his surprise, he learns that most of the boys he meets up with at homeless hangouts are selling their bodies to gay men. With their guidance, he becomes a hustler to straight women and earns enough to leave town and pursue his dream. Meantime, his best friend on the streets, who is gay, falls in love with him. Main character can't be the friend's lover, but his fraternal affection grows and they become very, very close.
