Where the Buffalo Roam (1980)
Member Rating:
Based on the writings and experiences of "gonzo" journalist Hunter S. Thompson, Where the Buffalo Roam details the adventures of Thompson (Bill Murray) and his attorney (Peter Boyle), whose character is rewritten as Mexican-American rather than Samoan, as they pillage and plunder their way across America on a drunken, drug-saturated mission to...well, their mission is as yet undetermined, but they set about it anyway. Highlights include a staged broadcast of the Super Bowl from Thompson's hotel room and a scene in which he escapes from the police with a little help from his trusty sidekick. ~ Jeremy Beday, Rovi

One of Bill Murray's best. If you love Hunter Thompson you'll love this take on his books. The movie is not quite Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and not quite Fear and Loathing on the campaign trail but rather a great sampler platter of Thompson's body of work. Rent it, you and your buddies will be quoting as many lines from "Where the Buffalo Roam" as you do from Murray's other extremely quotable movies. Just one great scene after another.

If you haven't read Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas and other HST books, this would be hard to fathom. Especially if you only watch it because Bill Murry is in it. At the time of its release, I was stunned at how dead-on it was. I never thought they'd capture the spirit, but they did. Murry is exceptional as Thompson, and if you catch Johnny Depp in Fear & Loathing in Vegas, you can appreciate how they both nailed Thompson.

It's a pretty fair representation of Hunter S. Thompson alright. If you're a fan, you'll enjoy the movie, but if you aren't familiar with gonzo journalism, you'll likely hate it. Bill Murray is a much better Thompson than Johnny Depp was in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

First saw it when I was younger of course in the 80's on cable. Loved it. Got me to want to start writing. I did- gave some of my work to my English teacher- she said I was sick and should seek some help-but she had a big smile on her face.

Whoever hasn't seen Where the Buffalo Roam is really missing an experience! The life and times of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson give new meaning to how crazy one life can be. Of course, Bill Murray and Peter Boyle, (who knew Dr. Thompson personally), both give one hell of a performance! With a suprising supporting cast trying to play against their drug and alcohol induced life styles, (no easy task!), this is one classic movie of insane proportions.

If you are not familiar with Hunter Thompson this movie makes absolutely no sense at all, and is a mess. Yes, Bill Murray is funny, but the so called "plot" is a mess. It is funny to see Peter Boyle with all that hair, though.

Having been there for Murray's career on SNL this is something hard to fathom even though I know the character represented. Someone who put a gun to his head and said goodbye. Murray's antics in the sand traps whirling a eldery lady around are more amusing than this flick.

I love the great Bill Murray, but this film is horrendous. Nothing is the least bit funny. I lasted 18 minutes before turning it off. Do you think the late Hunter S. Thompson used drugs? Doesn't everybody blow their head off with a shotgun over the kitchen sink? What a wacko.
