Oscar-winning director Florian Gallenberger explores the crucial role that foreigners played in helping countless Chinese escape a fate worse than death in this period docudrama concerning the 1937 invasion of Nanking by the ruthless Japanese Imperial Army. Casually known by historians as the "Rape of Nanking," the relentless assault on the then-Chinese capitol found countless men, women, and children slaughtered with a ferocity that shocked the entire world. Yet, despite the violence that surrounded them, some people refused to sit by silently as the innocents perished. One of those people was German engineer and Nazi party member John Rabe, who earned the nickname "The Schindler of China" for constructing a vast safety zone in which nearly a quarter of a million civilians sought sanctuary. Ulrich Tukur, Daniel Brühl, Dagmar Manzel, and Steve Buscemi star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This was a outstanding film about an extraordinary man. It portrayed the special "zone" that was established by John Robe and other Europeans/Americans to protect the Chinese that could squeeze into it from the Japanese who truly pillaged and destroyed Nanking in 1937 - the same kind of insane violence as in the Death March from Bataan. Subtitles do NOT take anything away from this.

A fantastic, intense film that brings to light a little known piece of World War II history. The film is in English, German, Chinese, and Japanese - a realitstic reflection of the diverse nationalities whose stories are told in this movie. But the focus is on the true story of a German Industrialist who has been stationed in Nanking for the 20 years prior to the Japanese invasion, and how he tries to save as many of his Chinese "workers" as he can.

Everyone should see this. Inspiring and full of surprises and tension. Note: there are beheadings and a scene of mass nudity, which makes this inappropriate for kids. Otherwise, it's a great movie to remember the viciousness of the Japanese in Nanking.

Very good movie...if you can stand the subtitles. My husband isn't a "subtitle" kinda guy so he wasn't too interested, until he noticed Steve Buscemi (HBO Boardwalk) was in the movie and spoke English! It was 3.5 out 5 stars!

Well directed german movie of events in Nanking at the start of WWII. The human relation between Americans and germans in China trying together to prevent the atocities of the Japanese upon Chinese civilians.

The lead actor was great; there was a lot going on in the film which made it hard for me to get into the story from the way it was directed. The film is informative though and certainly begs the question: What would you do?

This is a wonderful and very well made movie. It is by turns funny, frightening and profound. It's mostly in German and other languages, but with enough English to keep us Americans engaged.
