Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio team up for a fourth time for this adaptation of Shutter Island, a novel by Dennis Lehane (Mystic River). The film opens in 1954 as World War II veteran and current federal marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his new partner, Chuck (Mark Ruffalo), ferry to Shutter Island, a water-bound mental hospital housing the criminally insane. They have been asked to investigate the disappearance of Rachel Solando (Emily Mortimer), a patient admitted to the asylum after she murdered her three children. As Teddy quizzes Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley), the head of the institution, he begins to suspect that the authorities in charge might not be giving him the whole truth, and that a terrible fate may befall all the patients in the spooky Ward C -- a unit devoted to the most heinous of the hospital's inmates. Complicating matters further, Teddy has a secret of his own -- the arsonist who murdered his wife is incarcerated on Shutter Island. Driven to confront his wife's killer, and stranded on the island because of a hurricane, Teddy must unravel the secrets of the eerie place before succumbing to his own madness. Max von Sydow, Emily Mortimer, Michelle Williams, Patricia Clarkson, and Jackie Earle Haley round out the supporting cast. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

I wasn't sure if I was gong to like this movie. But I loved it! You think you might know know what is going on about half way through the film, but it keeps you guessing until the very end. I think people were disappointed because they were expecting a "scary" movie. This is a pyschological thriller, not a slasher movie. Which I think is scarier anyway.

I read the book and loved the film. One of very few books to translate well to film. This is NOT a "scary" movie but a psychological film worth seeing. DiCaprio gives one of his best performances.

A note to slasher movie enthsiasts, pls. note this is a Scorsese movie and not some terintino hostel sequal. Dont expect this to be a senseless horror/slasher... there are plenty of those out there that provide cheap thrills. Simply put, this is as classic as a suspense/thriller movie can get. I have seen most all of Scorsese and this would not disappoint fans of this genre. Infact, I felt that he took a bit of a deviation from his regular style into the suspense genre and did a superb job. The movie is gripping and keeps you all the way to the end. My only gripe in the movie was DiCaprio. Although he is no doubt a good actor, but there are a few others I would have picked for this role.

Some parts were good and mysterious, others were boring. Decaprio and Kinsgley are amazing actors but the movie was a little boring and slow in many places.

DiCaprio is not someone I want to see in any movie, I'm not at all a fan. Aside from that I would imagine from watching the movie the book was very good. That being said the movie wasn't bad...but by no means was it good. When I check out a "psychological thriller" I expect the movie to know where it's going it seemed to lose itself a few times and in the end the general message seemed to be "gotcha, just kidding, oh gotcha again" by the end of the move I found that I didn't care, I was just happy to see it end.
