Virus (1980) Reviews

Virus (1980)
Member Rating:
A double disaster film with both an American and a Japanese cast, Virus presents some pretty wild probabilities to viewers. First of all, a virus has been developed that gets loose and starts to destroy humanity on a grand scale. The only people who are remotely safe are a group of eight hundred men and eight women on Antarctica. Since the President of the United States warns them by radio communications not to accept anyone into their area who has been contaminated, the men and women are somewhat prepared. That does not mean they are ready to handle the crew of a Russian submarine that seeks refuge with them. The second disaster is nuclear, and part of the suspense lies in whether or not it will be ultimately averted -- and who, if any, will survive all this. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Interesting movie from the description, but falls far short of expectations. The International cast was nice, but it seemed like the American actors were old "has-beens" just for the international flavor. It just doesn't work very well, as the movie tries to do too much. The writing/plot development should've enhanced the basic virus theme, but apparently, that wasn't enough to satisfy the producer's appetites for nuclear explosions and mass carnage. As if they didn't have enough to worry about, they played the morality card of how to deal with 855 men and only 8 women. One woman is violated and rather than take action, they solemnly state that the conventional moralities had to be re-evaluated. Basically, each woman had to take on multiple lovers/mates in order to keep the species from dying off, and it was uneven with no real resolution. All in all, I would pass on this movie and instead, spend 2+ hours of your time doing something productive like cleaning out your sewer lines.

This is the WRONG VERSION of a good movie. This version is 108 min. and has 50 minutes cut from the original. Amazon has the 155 min. movie for about $10. Search under œmovies and tv with the sub-title œDay of Resurrection€. The case has Japanese writing on the top half of the case and under it in smaller print is €œVirus: Day of Resurrection. Video quality is very good. There is some over-acting and bad dialog but overall, the movie is great!

This movie had a top notch cast and I expected more, even with the rating it received. It is so unfortunate that so many good actors were involved in the piece. It lacks luster and wouldn't even make it as a "made for TV" movie anymore. Stock footageabout every five minutes, and Henry Silva just went way over the top. Shame on you!

One of the worst movies I've seen from Blockbuster. The sound was so low that I had to jack it up to twice what I usually play at. The Video was also bad and hardly viewable.

I got the wrong version of 'Virus' when renting this movie. Blockbuster sends the more recent 'Virus' with Jamie Lee fighting an electrical monster on a boat. Didn't know how to let them know.
