Member Rating:
From writer/director Anna Melikyan comes this whimsical drama about a green-haired girl whose family is forced to move from their rural home to Moscow. Once there, the quirky introverted girl comes of age while clashing with the trappings of the big city. Originally titled Rusalka, Mermaid screened at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

I"m interested in other cultures/ countries take on life/ ideas. From that basis I liked it. The Russia I grew up with hated capitalism, everyone dressed the same (school girls always had big bows on top of their heads) and they were given awards for having the most children. Everything for the communist motherland! The movie shows the complete opposite. I'm not sure why it ended the way it did. Was it the same car?

My children and I enjoyed this - "Quirky" is accurate ! It was interesting - entertaining - as well as surprising... worth the time - and effort for subtitles!

Quirky script and well acted. Not magical, but fanciful, the story holds your attention. It remains on the very cusp of real.

An odd and quirky movie with a terrific story of hardship, triumph and tragedy. A little difficult to watch due to the subtitles, but well worth the time invested.

Quirky is the word for this one. I wanted to love it, but only liked it.

i don't think this was appropriate for children, because for the nudity, talking of wanting to have se_x, the girl trying to get se_x, all of the drinking, suicide attempts, just not meant for viewing by young children (i don't think) they see and hear too much anymore without seeing and hearing it at home on a movie that "YOU BROUGHT HOME"

Did not like this movie at all. Tried to find some redeeming value in it, but could not force myself to sit through the end of this movie!
