A precocious Edwardian girl suffocating from the social norms is forced to choose between following her heart and obliging her family's wishes after falling for a handsome but unsuitable stranger during a trip to Italy. Based on author E.M. Forster's tale of forbidden love and scripted by Pride and Prejudice scribe Andrew Davies, director Nicholas Renton's playful period drama follows young Lucy Honeychurch as she takes a trip to Italy and exchanges a brief albeit life-altering kiss with the unsuitable George Emerson. Later, as Lucy's snooping chaperone attempts to keep her on the path laid out by her family, her engagement to the dull Cecil draws near, and her repressed feelings boil to the surface, she is taken aback to encounter the dashing object of her affections back in her homeland of England. What's a girl to do when her wedding date has been set in stone but the love of her life won't be standing at the alter? ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

i was enjoying this movie up till the very end! they rushed towards the happily ever after in a very odd way and than as if that wasn't horrible enough, andrew davies goes on and changes the very end to deflate everyone's romantic hopes for this couple, and it was so unnecessary that he did this!.........why? totally ruined the movie for me!!!

A decent movie in its own right, but an absolute Disaster and Puzzlement for anyone who has seen the Merchant-Ivory version (1986).. The Puzzlement being: WHO-- among those who decided to make this movie-- actually thought he/she had something more/better to portray than that earlier version?...and WHAT does he/she think it accomplished?

No where near as interesting as the Merchant Ivory version. The story seemed choppy, characters were not interesting and it just sort of ended in the middle of a sentence. Nothing original. Can't see why they made it. Disappointment.

I enjoyed this movie but somehow it lacked something. There seemed to be lack of passion. The struggle between the expectations of her parents and the desires of her heart may seem old fashioned but similar sitiuations occur in modern life under different guises.

Think I need to read the book. Enjoyed the movie, but the end was rushed and disappointing. Also felt that some information was missing from the entire movie.

I liked an earlier version of this movie, better actors, but I liked the ending of this movie better. It was Ok, seemed to lack the passion of the earlier version and the characters so wonderfully protrayed in that film.
