Produced by Burt Lancaster's own company, Vera Cruz teams Lancaster with the venerable Gary Cooper. The story, set during the Mexican revolution of 1866, casts Cooper and Lancaster as Ben Trane and Joe Erin, two rival soldiers of fortune who team to fight for the highest bidder. The two men come to loggerheads when Trane's sweetheart Nina (Sarita Montiel) begs them to fight on the side of the rebels, while the wealthy Marquis de Labodere (Cesar Romero) implores them to offer their services to Emperor Maximillian. Though they still haven't taken sides, Trane and Erin agree to escort the aristocratic Countess Marie Duvarre (Danielle Darrieux) through hostile territory to Vera Cruz. It soon develops that the Countess is transporting a gold shipment to the Emperor's armies. Hardly the most patriotic of souls, she offers to split the gold with Trane and Erin, but they steal it for themselves instead. It takes a while (and several bloody armed confrontations) before the two protagonists do The Right Thing. While it's fun to watch Burt Lancaster try to upstage the taciturn Gary Cooper, the film's best line goes to supporting player Henry Brandon: impassively watching the loutish Lancaster wolf down his dinner and slop wine all over his blouse, Brandon says calmly "Be careful, senor. great western from the fifties. Robert Aldrich's direction is terrific, and the shifting moral framework is stunning to follow. The action sequences are actually great, even though they seem old-fashioned a little now, compared to recent technical innovations..but they are way more coherent than most modern action sequences. Excellent movie, especially if you like Robert Aldrich (earlier that year he made Kiss Me Deadly), and Burt Lancaster is amazing in this. Choice dialogue: GC: so you have a soft spot for an innocent man? BL: There is no such thing as an innocent man.

Wouldn't it be great if contemporary movies were like this? Those were the days when actors had to act and producers had to film in actual locations without computer generated scenes. You just can't go wrong with Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster.

I remembered vera cruz because of the black outfit that burt lancaster wore. I did not remember that gary cooper was even in it. My husband and I both enjoyed seeing this old movie again. A great western with a good plot...lancaster was part producer, shows his acrobatic ability, But his smouldering bad boy sexuallity was what i remembered. WE both recommend this great movie, fun for men and women. Good story, good morals, even and steady direction. One of the best westerns.

Excellent, fun, dark western-noir. Gary Cooper, and especially Burt Lancaster are terrific. Lots of good moral and plot twists. Both men are mercenaries working for the highest bidder in the Mexican revolution, while planning to steal a fortune in gold from both their employers and from each other. Not quite powerful enough a to be a great film, but fun enough to be enjoyable even on 2nd viewing.
