Richard Sarafian directed this minimalist chase film, starring Barry Newman as ex-marine, ex-race car driver and cop named Kowalski. He drives into Denver to deliver a car and pick up another vehicle to drive to San Francisco. To make the fifteen-hour drive to San Francisco bearable he pops a load of pep pills and drives off. Almost immediately, he is told to pull over by the police, but Kowalski refuses to stop. Ignoring the cops, a police chase ensues. Egging Kowalski on is a blind black disc jockey, Super Soul (Cleavon Little), who announces his comings and goings on his local radio show, praising Kowalski to the skies as "the last American to whom speed means freedom of the soul." Super Soul's hype makes Kowalski a media sensation and Kowalski fans mount up -- as do the police cars chasing him -- as he races against time to deliver both the car and himself to his San Francisco destination. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

I really enjoyed this flick. It's clearly a 70's B movie, drive-in cult classic, and a person won't like it unless they appreciate it for what it is. It has all the hokey cliches. The scenery is impressive. I think it's a better cross-country-chase-sticking-it-to-the-man-going-out-in-a-blaze-of-glory film than Easy Rider. And, hey, you don't see naked-hippie-chick-riding-her-motorcycle-through-the-desert scenes like this very often.

If you lived through the sixties, you will love this movie. It certainly reflects the culture of that time from resisting authority to bigotry. Very well done and it keeps you on the edge of your seat. The ending will amaze you! I highly recommend this flick.

A lot of car chases, nice movie, nice music too. Cleavon Little did a great job as a DJ. If you liked Vanishing Point you should rent the original Gone in 60 Seconds it's also a great movie.

The main character is a car, but America circa 1971 rides shotgun. This includes a couple of gay thieves, a naked girl riding awkwardly around on a motorcycle, a faith healer, desert hermit, blind disc jockey and lots of beautiful open space. If you want to know what America was like 40 years ago, watch this movie.

Well worth the ride, still!

Fun movie, although I wondered what a hip, black DJ like Super Soul was doing broadcasting from a tiny, redneck Nevada town, and how his signal reached all the way to Utah.

For all of you out there that think Gone in 60 Seconds or Bullitt is the quintessential car chase movie, think again!! Vanishing Point is nothing but a car chase! It starts out great and ends great! I love how this movie shows the car chases with all the really cool old '60s and '70s cars, Kowalski's flashbacks of his life and his prescience...because he knew this was his last run. It is a beautiful movie, tinged with the taste of the '60s...you can tell that by the good music, the hippies, and the hot girl riding the motorcylce completely nude. GREAT MOVIE!!! Now if only they could remake it in 2006...

I did not enjoy this movie. I found it dull. Nothing more than a race car drive trying to deliver a car and being chase my police. Ending was poor.

Not a bad movie! The ending confused the heck outta me though, maybe if I wasn't born 11 years after this movie came out I'd understand it better. All-around it was pretty entertaining, and I appreciate the fact that when it looked like he was going fast he really was, 'cause they didn't have the camera tricks to fake it!

One of the best car movies out there, especially if you're a Mopar fan. '70 Dodge Challenger all the way through. It's just as much a star of the movie as Kowalski is. Just a fun movie all around. If you love classic American muscle, you have GOT to see this movie.
