A satiric romantic comedy, Martha Coolidge's Valley Girl is a testimony to the short-lived Southern California '80s craze. Julie (Deborah Foreman) is a good-natured teenager following a swarm of pastel pink valley girls, who utter "gag me" at every opportunity. To her friends' dismay , Julie breaks up with her egotistical boyfriend, Tommy (Michael Bowen), while shopping at the mall. All the valley kids go to a party that night, and Tommy immediately tries to bed one of Julie's friends. Randy (Nicolas Cage), a bad boy from Hollywood, shows up and crashes the party. Open-minded Julie flirts with him before he is literally thrown out, presumably just for looking different. Smitten with Julie, Randy sneaks back into the party to talk to her again. Julie drags a whimpering valley friend with her to spend the night cruising with Randy in Hollywood. After an extended courtship, Randy is in love with Julie, and she must choose between him and Tommy, who wants her back. Her friends refuse to accept Randy, who makes many exaggerated attempts to win back her love. Finally, after she has a heartfelt talk with her dad (Frederic Forrest), love triumphs at the prom. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi

You had to have watched this movie while in your teens to fully appreciate this classic. Some people have said, including Sean Penn, that this was Nicholas Cage's best acting job. What a classic from the music to the acting!

I really enjoyed this movie. It does have some of the triats of a typical 80's teen comedy, but also has much more. The acting was much better than I expected. The plot is well thought out. The character development is great. All in all a very good movie.

Watching this as a teen & then watching it as a parent is very different! However, I still LOVE it. My kids didn't understand all of the adult humor, but LOVED the music. They still point out songs on the radio! For Sure, like gag me with a spoon. Love it!

I enjoyed this moive. The plot was well thought out. No special effects, or suspense, or gore, just a message that is timeless with A lot of nice scenery.

A great movie with a really good soundtrack. I had forgotten how much I liked this movie until recently. It is a pretty decent takeoff of Romeo and Juliet. I would actually recomend it to those who liked Fast Times at Ridgemont high.

Not worth the time to watch past the first 10 minutes.

The plot is thin and most of the supporting actors are amateurish. But then there's Nicolas Cage in any early performance with an over-the-top hair-do, heavy eyebrows, sad eyes, and what looks like a chest hair toupe! If you're from L.A., and especially the San Fernando Valley, you'll love the sights they see on their cruising dates, especially Ventura Boulevard. Have to give the set designers credit -- lots of authentic 80's touches. Watch for the dad doing macrame.

I must have watched a different movie. This was one of the worst written and acted movies I've ever suffered through. It makes any John Hughes movie look like Citizen Kane. Stay away!
