Beyond the Golden Compass: The Magic of Philip Pullman (2007)
Member Rating:
Take a behind-the-scenes look at a world filled with secret codes and magical symbols in this documentary that searches for the hidden meanings in author Philip Pullman's best-selling fantasy novel The Golden Compass. Lyra's world is a parallel universe in which each person is guided by their animal daemon, and where great beauty masks fathomless evil. Follow along as historians, experts, and even the Philip Pullman himself offer a guided tour of this wondrous realm while computer generated animation and rare archival footage turn fantasy into reality right before your very eyes. Other materials featured in this program include a special slide show with Jean Pierre Isbouts and a walking interview with Darkness Visible: Inside the World of Philip Pullman author Nicholas Tucker. This documentary is not authorized or endorsed by New Line Cinema, or in any way associated with the film or the His Dark Materials line of books. The author himself authorized his participation in the program. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Don't be dictated to by people telling you what you should and shouldn't view. OOhh it's bad for your children, What are they going to melt after viewing it. Doesn't this give you the opportunity to open a discussion with your child or others about it's content. I don't see this group making a fuss about The Golden Compass being nominated for a few Oscars, maybe you can picket and throw bibles at people walking the red carpet at the ceremony. Make sure you hit Tom Cruise with one. Watch it and make your own judgements. Don't be a muppet !!

This is an unusual documentary; it's not a film on how The Golden Compass is made but how Philip Pullman put together his Golden Compass story and his Dark Materials books. It's a darn good job and an excellent introduction to the movie. Pullman put more of the real world into his fantasy than did C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien did theirs.

Everyone has the right to believe what they want, and I am forwarding this email on as a head's up for some parents that may want to take their children to see this movie that there is an ulterior message behind it. SO SCARY....BEWARE!! Please check this out! You may already know about this, but I just learned about a kids movie coming out in December starring Nicole Kidman. It's called The Golden Compass, and while it will be a watered down version, it is based on a series of children's books about killing God (It is the anti-Narnia). Please follow this link, and then pass it on. From what I understand, Please go to this link to learn more about why this movie is bad. http://snopes.com/politics/religion/compass.asp
