Dario Argento leaves a distinct and bloody impression with this Italian horror film that took the slasher genre to graphic new limits at the time of its release. Novelist Peter Neal (Anthony Franciosa) jets into Rome to promote his new book. Simultaneously, a killer obsessed with Neal begins a brutal series of murders that are followed by cryptic notes to the author. Inspector Germani (Giuliano Gemma) questions Neal, who then begins his own investigation into the bizarre case with the help of his assistant, Anne (Daria Nicolodi), and local youth Gianni (Christian Borromeo). Neal and Gianni follow leads to the home of a TV talk-show host (John Steiner), who is axed to death in front of Gianni while Neal is knocked unconscious. As they close in on the killer, flashbacks show the killer's murderous beginnings and an obsession with red shoes. Meanwhile, Neal's publicist, Bullmer (John Saxon), is revealed to be having an affair with the author's ex-lover, Jane (Veronica Lario), making them both potential suspects. Inspector Germani insists that Neal leave town, but even when he does, the killer strikes again, knifing Bullmer in broad daylight. At the same time, Gianni returns to the home of the dead talk-show host and recalls an important detail about the murder. However, he is strangled before he can tell anyone. At her apartment, Jane is brutally slain just as Inspector Germani arrives to discover the murderer's identity, along with the shocking, twist-filled truth behind the entire case. ~ Patrick Legare, Rovi

Another suspensfull murder mystery by Argento. A decent amount of blood and female nudity. I'm sure most of you will predict who the murderer(murderers?) is, but I could not. I kept changing my mind on who it was. Wish I had that talented doberman pincher.-Stone

This film is often considered the last great Giallo and I can agree. Dario Argento is at the top of his game hear producing suspenceful camera movement, beautiful death scene and a story line keeping you at the edge of your seat constantly. Since the supernatural theme of Argento's previuos two films (Suspiria and Inferno) he returns to the Giallo fresh with a new vision and a new story to tell. Next to Suspiria and Bird With the Crystal Plumage it's my favorite Argento film and highly recommended even if you'r not familiar with the Giallo Genre or Dario Argento's films.

I enjoyed this movie, although it is a bit dated. Dario Argento's style is somewhat addictive and he uses it in this movie to his advantage. It has a good story with suspense and twists. Worth watching.

tenebre was really good, kept you guessing, and a whole lot of blood. liked it better than deep red. typical Argento. ending was better than most slasher flix i have ever seen.

This was alright with pretty good kill scenes, but that alone doesn't make a movie great. Music was bad at times even for early 80s and sometimes the movie liked more like early 70s.

Jeez Loueez, this blew. I'm cool with Tony Franciosa and John Saxon - they're the type of cheesy actors that I can tolerate. I've enjoyed sporadic Argento films in the past, like Murder at the Opera. But this one is a steamer. Terrible plot, crappy acting, all kinds of bad blood effects . . . and absolutely no suspense because it telegraphs the entire plot in the first 15 minutes! There are some great shots - like the spiraling crane shot in the airport and the weird up-one-side-down-the-other appartment shot. Otherwise, this is more of a movie to laugh at (axes through scruvy Italian guys' heads). And there are few groaners at the expense of the hot yet emotionally maladjusted lesbians.

Sorry I didn't like this one at all and I came into it with an open mind.

I first saw this movie when I was 9 and I was horrified. I subsequently rented this last week 15 years later and I couldn't stop laughing at the predictable and silly murder scenes.
