Unforgiven (1992)
Member Rating:
Dedicated to his mentors Sergio Leone and Don Siegel, Clint Eastwood's 1992 Oscar-winner examines the mythic violence of the Western, taking on the ghosts of his own star past. Disgusted by Sheriff "Little Bill" Daggett's decree that several ponies make up for a cowhand's slashing a whore's face, Big Whiskey prostitutes, led by fierce Strawberry Alice (Frances Fisher), take justice into their own hands and put a $1000 bounty on the lives of the perpetrators. Notorious outlaw-turned-hog farmer William Munny (Eastwood) is sought out by neophyte gunslinger the Schofield Kid (Jaimz Woolvett) to go with him to Big Whiskey and collect the bounty. While Munny insists, "I ain't like that no more," he needs the bounty money for his children, and the two men convince Munny's clean-living comrade Ned Logan (Morgan Freeman) to join them in righting a wrong done to a woman. Little Bill (Oscar-winner Gene Hackman), however, has no intention of letting any bounty hunters impinge on his iron-clad authority. When pompous gunman English Bob (Richard Harris) arrives in Big Whiskey with pulp biographer W.W. Beauchamp (Saul Rubinek) in tow, Little Bill beats Bob senseless and promises to tell Beauchamp the real story about violent frontier life and justice. But when Munny, the true unwritten legend, comes to town, everyone soon learns a harsh lesson about the price of vindictive bloodshed and the malleability of ideas like "justice." "I don't deserve this," pleads Little Bill. "Deserve's got nothin' to do with it," growls Munny, simultaneously summing up the insanity of western violence and the legacy of Eastwood's Man With No Name. ~ Lucia Bozzola, Rovi

THE most underrated movie out there. This movie has it all and this is Clint's finest work.

Excellent movie. I highly recommend it if you're into Clint and/or westerns.

Not your typical western, and is instead more of a period piece ca. 1878. The inside shots are dark, as they likely were when lit by candles or oil lamps. The whores were chattels, in this case worth 7 ponies to the brothel-keeper. And the hero was trying to become civilized, as was the west just before the new century dawned. I enjoyed it, but I don't think it deserved an academy award for best picture. There must have been some meagre alternatives in 1992.

Simply awesome movie and if I might be so bold as to say its one of the best westerns made to date. Its characters are well developed and dialogue and actions are believable. Great job by Eastwood and gang. The final showdown scene is a work of art.

Unforgiven takes many of the staples of the western genre and either flips them or holds them up to a new light. In the process, the typical good guy/ bad guy dichotomy of most westerns get blurred away. The result is an indictment against the western myth itself. All the characters, from the prostitutes (with the "heart of gold") to the sherrif, to the ex-gunslinger/ lead (Eastwood as Bill Munny) are shown to be flawed, quick to violence, self-serving, and all too enamored of the very myths of western violence and vigilanteeism that ultimately dooms them. This is one of a few movies that bear rewatching and talking about afterwords.

One of the best movies I've ever seen. The story is beleivable and flows well. The characters are well developed. Though this is a western the characters remind me of people I encounter in everyday life. The movie is filled with beautiful scenery. Each scene and side story is interesting and leads well into the next. The jail scene with Little Bill, Mr. Boshamp, and English Bob really teaches something about human nature. Though this isn't really an action movie, the last scene won't disappoint any Eastwood fan.

A movie that portrays that cowboys had a great sense of right and wrong and guilt made many choices for them. Clint Eastwood's facial expressions portray the true meaning of the movie.
