Unforgiven (1992)
Member Rating:
Dedicated to his mentors Sergio Leone and Don Siegel, Clint Eastwood's 1992 Oscar-winner examines the mythic violence of the Western, taking on the ghosts of his own star past. Disgusted by Sheriff "Little Bill" Daggett's decree that several ponies make up for a cowhand's slashing a whore's face, Big Whiskey prostitutes, led by fierce Strawberry Alice (Frances Fisher), take justice into their own hands and put a $1000 bounty on the lives of the perpetrators. Notorious outlaw-turned-hog farmer William Munny (Eastwood) is sought out by neophyte gunslinger the Schofield Kid (Jaimz Woolvett) to go with him to Big Whiskey and collect the bounty. While Munny insists, "I ain't like that no more," he needs the bounty money for his children, and the two men convince Munny's clean-living comrade Ned Logan (Morgan Freeman) to join them in righting a wrong done to a woman. Little Bill (Oscar-winner Gene Hackman), however, has no intention of letting any bounty hunters impinge on his iron-clad authority. When pompous gunman English Bob (Richard Harris) arrives in Big Whiskey with pulp biographer W.W. Beauchamp (Saul Rubinek) in tow, Little Bill beats Bob senseless and promises to tell Beauchamp the real story about violent frontier life and justice. But when Munny, the true unwritten legend, comes to town, everyone soon learns a harsh lesson about the price of vindictive bloodshed and the malleability of ideas like "justice." "I don't deserve this," pleads Little Bill. "Deserve's got nothin' to do with it," growls Munny, simultaneously summing up the insanity of western violence and the legacy of Eastwood's Man With No Name. ~ Lucia Bozzola, Rovi

If you haven't seen it, rent it now. Doesn't matter if you like "Westerns" ... if you like good film, it is astounding.

This is a good movie with a moral lesson. A worthwhile rental. It moves a little slow but it keeps you interested. WATCH IT TONIGHT!

I love this movie. I love the plot. I love how the women band together to protect themselves. I appreciate the small bits of humor. I love Eastman and Freeman together. Good story. I love the love story of the faith and goodness of a wife and the impact of love on a life. Lots of gun fights, tough talk, drinking and planning. Second would be the Outlaw Josey Wales.

I am not a super fan of westerns, but this is a must see. It has a realism and a believability that others do not. There is a great interplay among characters - well put together and well acted. A movie you will likely not forget.

I love westerns but how I hated this movie. I thought it was long, boring and slow. None of the action took place until darn near the end of the movie if you ask me. I'm a Clint Eastwood and big Morgan Freeman fan but the Tin Star with Henry Fonda and Anthony Perkins was much more enjoyable.

You can't please everybody all the time. I was not so pleased. I thought the story was driven by a weak premise and we are supposed to be rooting for this none-hero that Eastwood plays. However, the action is very realistic and it looks like it was filmed almost entirely without studio lights. That helps in the realism but sometimes the movie is too dark.

A movie that portrays that cowboys had a great sense of right and wrong and guilt made many choices for them. Clint Eastwood's facial expressions portray the true meaning of the movie.
