Preston Sturges' Unfaithfully Yours is a typically witty and wild screwball comedy starring Rex Harrison as a symphony conductor named Alfred de Carter who is convinced his wife (Linda Darnell) is having an affair. During one of his concerts, Alfred begins planning three different ways of solving the problem -- including murder -- setting each to a different classical piece. Sturges' script and direction are lively and the actors are perfectly cast, capable of wringing all the humor, both physical and verbal, out of the story. Despite the artistic success of the film, Unfaithfully Yours was unsuccessful at the time of its release, yet it was well-regarded by critics and film buffs. It was remade in 1984, featuring Dudley Moore in the lead role. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

I would love to write a review of this excellent movie, but you morons keep mistakenly sending me the 1984 version with Dudley Moore in the lead. Three consecutive bobbles so far, and counting.

Preston Sturges - is there anyone else who can write such witty, wise and wonderful banter - and who knew that Rex Harrison had such slapstick funny bone! My husband who says things like - oh, it's in black and white - actually thought this was a hoot! He turned to me within the first 10 minutes and said "you know this has some funny bits" Halleluiah! we can actually enjoy an old movie together! Linda Darnell is gorgeous and the movie is wonderfully comical in its look at jealousy, letting our imaginations get the best of us, and the fatasy wife who adores the "gifted" artist while overlooking his mercurial moods.

Personally, Unfaithfully Yours (1948) is really a nice and humorous type of movie. It just shows you that "a beautiful woman can drive any man crazy." In this case, her own husband. This movie just demonstrates a silly type of funny throughout . For its time, Unfaithfully Yours was a very ingenious type of movie in terms of plot and development. The movie just keeps climaxing higher and higher until the grand finale that made me laugh so hard. What a beautiful woman can really do to a man especially if it is his beautiful wife by his side!! He, he, he... Rex Harrison and Linda Darnell deliver a marvelous acting performance throughout this movie I have to say. You really have to see the humor and silliness throughout this movie. Preston Sturges did a good job in directing and presenting this movie. This movie is a DEFINITE MUST-SEE. It is worth the watch.

Watched a slew of old 40's movies lately; this one is fun for the silly plot and snappy dialogue - better than 27 Dresses or anything Aniston or Roberts. And, if you like classical music or Rex Harrison it's entertaining. Linda Darnett was terrific - all the right emotions, and what gorgeous skin! Love the clothes - but still like B&W

At a few points in this movie it si screwball comedy. But, it is black comedy at that,..NOT the "Bring Up Baby" Screwball comedy type. I guess the problem I had was with the dark humor. ..and how he becomes so mad at his wife for cheating that he is going to kill her,..and the detail on how he is going to kill her....seemed very harsh for 1942. Then in the next breath gives her his undying love to her... Although a number of people really like it and see the humor in all of this,...I just didn't

Except for the luminous acting of Linda Darnell, this overwrought, overscored, overdone piece of fluff has little going for it. From Rex Harrison chewing the scenery to the other actors all blending together in the background, the movie is subservient to the admittedly gorgeous music and rides along on the thinnest of plots. Yuck, yuck, yuck.

I was amazed at how bad it was. Rex Harrison was trying to do slapstick comedy and it wasn't funny at all. I gave it two stars instead of only one because I do like Rex and Linda Darnell. But it was really a lame movie.
