The Blob (1958) Reviews

The Blob (1958)

In his first starring role, Steve McQueen plays a typical oversexed, car-lovin' highschooler who can't get anyone to believe his story about a huge meteor, which crashes to earth and begins exuding a pink, gooey substance. Affixing itself to the body of an old man, the "blob" begins parasitically sucking the life out of several unfortunate humans, growing to an enormous size. Problem is, the disappearances of the victims can all be explained (one is supposed to be out of town, another is attending a convention), so the cops still won't believe McQueen or his girlfriend Aneta Corsaut (the future Helen Crump of The Andy Griffith Show). Rallying his teen pals, McQueen finally manages to get the adults' attention-but by now, the Blob is consuming entire city blocks. In 1972, the sequel Beware the Blob followed. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This was one of the first movies that really scared me as a child. Now that I'm an adult, I can appreciate the acting skills of the blossoming actor Seve McQueen. The rest of the acting is so-so and the technical aspects are amusing as viewed from our era. Still, it is an icon in it's genre.

For 1958 it was a big hit. Fun to watch again today. If you were around in 1958 give it another chance. Brings back memories. I love looking at the prices of food in the window of the Market.

Not sure who is giving this movie good reviews because I truly hated this movie. Calling it low budget would be a compliment. The acting, directing, special effects were horrendous. It moves so slowly it felt like torture. Don't bother, try the black and white version.

Love the theme song! Great "scary" movie to watch w/the kids as there is enough "old stuff" to make them laugh and bring comic relief.

What a cornball movie! Bad script and bad acting all around. Rent it only to see Steve McQueen in his first starring role. Thank goodness it was only 82 mins.
