Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970)
Member Rating:
Director Budd Boetticher wrote the story upon which this comic Western was based. Clint Eastwood stars as Hogan, a tough cowboy who rescues a woman, Sara (Shirley Maclaine) as she's about to be attacked by a trio of rapists. Surprised to learn that his new traveling companion is a nun, Hogan agrees to escort her to a camp occupied by anti-French revolutionaries. It turns out that neither of this pair is what they claim to be: Hogan is to scout out a French military garrison for a future attack, while Sara is actually a prostitute masquerading as a nun. After Hogan spies Sara smoking cigars and drinking whiskey, he begins to figure out she's not a bride of Christ, and the two team up with the Juaristas to destroy the French fortifications. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

I enjoyed this movie! It is good like all of Clint Eastwoods western's. In my opinion he is one of the greatest actors of all time. The movie was well shot and the story was good. One cool thing about Clint Eastwood's movies he can be funny and serious at the same time.

As a comedy/spaghetti western it was great. It's not for those who want nothing but action.

This was not one of Clint Eastwoods best westerns. I'm a fan of his movies but I found myself through out this one checking the time and getting a snack without pausing it. As another reviewer said here. I always caught this movie on TV. And you all know how they cut up movies to get more commercials in? So I rented the dvd to get anything I may have missed on TV. There are some cheesy special effects in it. Like when a soldier gets a machete in the head. But not bad for 1970 effects. It's the story I guess that never really grabbed my attention, If you haven't seen some of Clint's other westerns. Watch them and save this one for your B list.

Up till now, I've always had to catch this delightful film on TV. What fun to see what I've been missing all this time due to network cuts! Maclaine is in high-form in her "dual" role as nun and hooker and Eastwood -- well, what can you say about a guy born to play the rugged loner in this role? Great fun and a good Western!

For casual fans, they'll see an above-average Western. For fans who know Sergio Leone/Clint Eastwood films, such as "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly", will get more enjoyment out of the film. Ennio Moricone of the Leone westerns, even does the soundtrack here, giving it a whimsical "mule-sounding" theme. Clint Eastwood is very solid and at his peak here. American Don Siegel director is at the helm and retains a lot of the quirky humor of Leone films, but adding his own brand of (sometimes violent) action. Shirley Maclaine is great here as the pious but spunky nun, and her admirers will greatly enjoy. But for other's not familiar with Maclaine's earlier Hollywood starlet years, they might not buy Eastwood's (Hogan's) attraction to the older Maclaine. To rectify that, I recommend renting classic urban comedy "The Apartment" (w/ Jack Lemmon) to see Maclaine at her mesmerizing best and understand how this charming, pixie-like beauty charmed an entire nation (and Eastwood).
