Two well-known directors each adapt stories by Edgar Allen Poe in this horror drama. George Romero's "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar" tells how the wife of an elderly, wealthy man and her lover--who also happens to be the husband's private physician--scheme to control his assets. Dying before they can carry out their plans, his soul is caught between life and death while they freeze the body to finish their work. In the Dario Argento-directed "The Black Cat" a crime photographer, known for his photos' gruesome content, kills his girlfriend's titular pet and then his girlfriend. This was OK - two short stories having nothing to do with one another. The first one was a classic tale of "let's kill my husband so we can be rich and stop hiding our affair". Kind of a zombie-ish story. The second involves an artist that has gone a little crazy - we all know Harvey Keitel can play that role well. This was kind of like another episode of Tales from the Crypt. Nothing spectacular, but somewhat entertaining.

The duel Poe stories were just okay; the first, Romero's "Valdemar", takes it's time getting started but has a pretty good creepy ending. "The Black Cat" was better, truly gruesome as Argento does so well. But what was worth the rent was in the extras; interviews with SFX master Tom Savini (including a brief tour of his home back when he was doing Two Evil Eyes). Interesting seeing him talk about what he loves doing, with short clips of how he came up with some of the effects and make up.
