Too Late for Tears (1949)
Member Rating:
When Lizabeth Scott's Jane Greer husband Arthur Kennedy accidentally gets his mitts on $60,000 in stolen money, she insists that he keep the dough rather than turn it over to the authorities. Two-bit private eye Dan Duryea catches on to Scott's subterfuge, and demands that she turn the cash over to him. Scott persuades Duryea to split the money with her--then, determining that Kennedy might be too honest for everyone's own good, she murders her husband. To cover her tracks, Scott reports her husband as missing. This brings in yet another fly in the ointment: Don DeFore, the brother of Scott's first husband, who died under mysterious circumstances. The already knotted webs of intrigue become even more tangled before Scott's ironic comeuppance. Too Late for Tears was scripted by Roy Huggins, who later produced such TV detective series as The Rockford Files. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

THIS WAS A GOOD FIM. THE PRINT WAS POOR AND WORN. KNOWING THAT, I WOULD STILL RECOMMEND THIS FILM TO PEOPLE THAT ENJOY A GOOD PULP STORY. THE LEAD PROTAGONIST WAS A DOOZY OF A GAL WHO KNEW ALL THE ANGLES. SHE WAS A PLEASURE TO WATCH AS SHE WEAVED HER TANGLED WEB OF LIES AND DECIET. AS AN ADDED BONUS, THERE WAS A FILM ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DISK CALLED "HOODLUM", AN OLD BLACK AND WHITE GANGSTER MOVIE ABOUT A BANK HEIST. THE PICTURE QUALITY WAS NOT GOOD BUT IT WAS WATCHABLE. OVER ALL I WOULD RECOMMEND THESE FILMS. RENT IT TODAY ITS A 2 FOR ONE DEAL.

Forget about DVD quality, I'm talkin' bout the movie - Noir fans are in for a very pleasant surprise! This is one of the least known noirs and it's too bad 'cause it's a real classic of the genre, really worth a look! Featuring one of the steeliest dames in movie history and I agree, Liz Scott lacks charm compared to other stars of that era, but this role seems tailored to "fit her weaknesses" - it uses the carnal venality of her features to great effect. Her best role by far and Duryea's also excellent.

The picture quality of the DVD was bad and a lot of the lines were clipped or skipped, so it is hard to judge this movie. The story line was pretty good, but the dialogue was horrible. I might give it another try if I could actually watch it "error-free."

We had to shut if off several minutes into the movie. The picture is so dark you don't even realize the car is a convertible until several minutes into the movie. Very frustrating.

Lizabeth Scott lacks the charm of most leading ladies of the era. This was the first movie I have ever seen her in and I was mesmerized at how unappealing and unconvincing she is. I like the plot but her acting is atrocious. Her deep monotone voice is horrible. Sexy it isn't. She's no Lauren Becall. I never heard of her until this movie. I had a certain opinion about her personal life based on the way she looks and acts in this movie. Then I did a little research and my opinion coincides with the rumors which may be untrue. I think this movie would have been better with a different actress.
