Tommy (Roger Daltrey) is a "deaf, dumb and blind kid" who retreats into himself after the death of his father. His mother, Nora (Ann-Margret), and stepfather Frank (Oliver Reed) take him to see a specialist (Jack Nicholson) but Tommy is apparently a hopeless case. That is, until Tommy discovers that "he sure plays a mean pinball." Tommy gains fame when he defeats the Pinball Wizard (Elton John) for the world championship. As a result, Tommy becomes such a celebrity that he even founds his own religious cult. But his fans begin to commercialize his fame, while Tommy wants to stick to the straight and narrow. When Tommy wants to end the commercialization of his message, his supporters accuse him of being hypocritical and turn on him. Ann-Margret, with a slinky red dress slit way up the side, was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar, losing out to Louise Fletcher in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

Although I saw this as a child when it came out in the 70's, it was different and interesting to see it again.

Loved it! Great music and excellent acting. I especially liked Oliver Reed's portrayal of Tommy's father. Loved the parody. Must have been quite a challenge for Daltrey to play Tommy, keeping his mouth shut and emoting non-verbally until near the end of the film. Amusing character studies of bizarre individuals and human nature in general. Hardly recognized Ann Margret as Tommy's mom.

Kind of ridiculous. Maybe it should have been left as the album only and not make an attempt to visualize it. Elton John scene was pretty interesting thought

Bizzare movie. Pete Townshend obivously is one of the smartest people in rock history. If Roger Daltrey weren't a musician already, I garuntee he would've made it big as an actor. Great movie. A must see for all music and movie lovers.

Thought I remembered liking it when it came out and I was 19 or so- maybe I was stoned then. It is lame and disjointed, with cartoonish "acting", and the music isn't even as good as on the album!

My wife and I rented this because we liked the story line described. Disappointed would be a great understatement. We watched it for 15 minutes and that was all we could take. Couldn't return it fast enough. If this is your genre', more power to you! --Dan C
