Tom Horn (1980) Reviews

Tom Horn (1980)

Steve McQueen's penultimate film deals with a fascinating western legend, founded on an insightful script by Thomas McGuane and Bud Shrake. Unfortunately, the film was done in by the five directors --Don Siegel, Elliot Silverstein, James Guercio, William Wiard, and McQueen himself-- that were, at one point or another, attached to the project. The film deals with the infamous Texas gunslinger Tom Horn. Horn gained fame for a variety of exploits; he served with Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders and was the Pinkerton detective who captured the notorious outlaw Peg Leg Watson. But as Tom Horn begins, something in Horn (Steve McQueen) has snapped. Tom quits the Pinkertons and hires himself out to rancher John Coble (Richard Farnsworth) to assist him in putting an end to his problems with the local homesteaders and rustlers. But Horn performers his job with a chilling intensity, killing so many people with such bloodthirsty rage that it is even too much for Coble and the ranchers to take. When Horn's violence cannot be stopped, Coble has to take the law into his own hands to put a halt to Horn's bloodbath. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

Tom Horn is a great western and of course it stars Steve McQueen who is one of the best of the best... The story is based on the life of Tom Horn who was a western legernd. I can't figure out why they left Linda Evans' character Glendolene Kimmel in the film with her name unchanged (the real character was really named Glendolene Kimmel) yet they changed the name of the US Marshall from Joe LeFors to Joe Belle and the 15 year old sheep herder to Nolt while the historical name was Nickell. The film is very good and I recommend it highly.

A must see for S-MQ fans. Based on a true story, High End Cattle Ranchers can not get rid of their problem, so Tom is hired as a "Stock Detective". Every once in awhile, someone comes around not to be messed with. Tom's from the old days with the old ways. One warning, an no quarter there after. Stunning photography of the West & Tom's love for it, his horse [Champion] and the life he has lived. If you love Westerns, this will attest to the honor that most of us have for our past. Ofcourse Tom is too good at his job, and must be delt with by the very people who hired him. I seen this movie 50x, & I will watch it another 50x until I konk. More mind action than a shoot'm-up. Should be [in] your dvd library. Where are they now when we need them? Michael Armstrong/Richland MI/Proud Blue-Collar Worker/ God Bless USA and ALL Who Honor & Serve Her

Originally saw this great western 30 years ago. It was so enjoyable to go back and see it again on DVD. One of the truly REAL "macho men" in movie history, Steve McQueen gives his usual superb performance. If you read about this incident in history, you realize that Hollywood, as they so often do, took some liberties with the facts in the screenplay, but this is still a wonderful western. The one thing that was obvious to me was McQueen, as good as he was, was a sick man dealing with his bout with the cancer that eventually took his life. This was his next-to-last movie before his untimely and unfortunate passing. Treat yourself to one of the fine actors in cinema history and view "Tom Horn".

While based on a true story, is is not based upon the autobiography that the credits says it is taken from. It is still a good McQueen movie.
