Back when I was a kid (I think Ulysses S. Grant was President), Kevin Corcoran (aka "Moochie") was the kid I wanted to be, and like many, I had the dream of running away with the circus. So this, his biggest starring vehicle, was my ultimate wish-fulfillment movie, and easily my favorite of its era. Can't actually say that I have my finger on the pulse of kids of today, as to whether clean, exciting, colorful, pure-Disney entertainment will glue them to their seats as it did me, but I suspect it will. We loved this movie! We had just gone to see the Barnum and Bailey Circus with our two boys (4 and 7) and my husband remembered seeing it as a kid and thought it'd be a good movie for our kids to see. Young kids today don't realize how important the circus was to people in years past when the circus was just about the only entertainment around. There weren't TVs and movie theaters back then... I totally loved this movie. What kid hasn't dreamed of running away with th circus?Toby does, because of a misunderstanding with his foster parents. A good family movie with a typical Disney-style happy ending. Was this review helpful? Yes

This is a movie that has a particular appeal for boys who were of a certain age when it was first released. The notion of "running off to join the circus" does not play the same role in my childrens' fantasies as it did in mine. To me, it was something like what joining a band and becoming famous might be today.
In any case, this movie does capture quite a bit of those feelings. The plot is somewhat contrived, characters are stereotypical, and the "lesson" is a bit heavy-handed, but somehow all of that contrbutes to, rather than detracting from, the film's ability to recreate that adolescent longing for escape from drudgery and blame, for adventure, novelty and the first blush of romance.
The acting is probably also worth mentioning. The main character, Toby, is pretty bland, but several of the supporting cast are wonderful character actors, and are given some latitude to go a little "over the top" since that is more-or-less what circuses are all about. Was this review helpful? Yes

This is the very first movie I have ever seen. When I saw it as a child, I could not help but bond with Toby Tyler who represents the child in all of us (or the child we are). Beautiful story telling that I promise the family will like. Teenagers may not be so enthused, but when they grow up and enter adult hood, they may see this movie in a totally different light that helps them reflect on their childhood and remember.
