In George Pal's version of the H.G. Wells classic, Rod Taylor stars as George, a young scientist fascinated with the concept of time travel. On December 31, 1899, George seats himself in his jerry-built time machine and thrusts himself forward into 1917. A dyed-in-the-wool pacifist, George is distressed to see that World War I is raging all about him. He moves past the 1920s and 1930s into the 1940s, only to be confronted by another, even more terrible war. Next he stops in 1966, just as London is destroyed in a nuclear explosion. Retreating to his Time Machine, George is sealed in his cellar by molten lava. By the time he and his machine manage to escape their tomb, the year is 802,701. Looking around, George observes a seemingly idyllic world populated by gentle people. But he also notices that the citizens of the future, known as "Elois," behave more like mindless sheep than human beings. Befriending the lovely Weena (Yvette Mimieux), George learns to his dismay that humankind has forgotten all that it has learned through the centuries, preferring instead to frolic endlessly under the sun. Plot holes and inconsistencies abound in The Time Machine, but the film's true selling points was its Oscar-winning special effects; in this respect, producer-director Pal succeeded beyond anyone's wildest dreams. Another plus: the haunting musical score by Russell Garcia. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is a great masterpiece! It was way past its time. I would recommend it to all to at least see once in their life.

Love this guy! The time machine is a good story. This film does a pretty good job sticking to the novel. This is a good choice for classic sci fi fans and fun for Rod Taylor fans!

first, and was glad to see the stories were told a little differently. I thought this version was more entertaining. There are some things about it that could have been done better, that were corrected with the 2002 version, but I thought the circumstances that the main character found himself in this version to be more interesting to watch.

One of my favorite childhood films. Upon recent viewing it holds up surprisingly well even without modern effects. Compelling storytelling, great soundtrack. I almost watched it twice in a row.

I had seen this movie years ago before reading the book recently. It does not follow the book exactly, but it is very good. I was helping my grandson understand what he was reading, and the movie helped him. He really enjoyed seeing what the time machine might have looked like.

Wonderful, timeless movie! Best scene is the view of London in 1966 and the degression of society. Quite entertaining and even though the special effects are dated, they're still thrilling. Definitely worth watching!

An entertaining film and a timeless film in its generation, but uncomparable to today's standard of science fiction flims, especially for modern movie goers. Comparable to Star Trek genre. This was a high budget movie of that time with great effort to produce special effects and futuristic sets and design to make the film look like a time travel. Time machine was really crafty and neat. Good book-to-flim analogy with original lines from the book. Not a two thumbs of type of movie in today's world, but good enought to watch once so you can see what all the hype is about.

A classic film that everyone must see. Done with 1960s sets and acting, so hard to give it more than 4 stars.
