Water Lilies (2007) Reviews

Water Lilies (2007)
Member Rating:
Three 15-year-old girls living in the ultra-modern Paris suburb of Cergy-Pontoise find the dynamics of their relationships gradually beginning to shift in first-time filmmaker Céline Sciamma's intimate look into the world of synchronized swimming. Floriane (Adele Haenel) is a beautiful blonde with a perfect body and remarkable talent in the pool. Marie (Pauline Acquart) is something of a tomboy taken to water, and Anne (Louise Blachere) is an overweight-but-outgoing swimmer whose crush on a male swimmer (who only has eyes for the physically flawless Floriane) is about to forever change the way these three disparate souls relate to one another. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This is your classic friend triangle. A girl ditches her best friend to hang out with the more popular, beautiful girl. At first it seems the young girl is drawn to this new girl because of her swimming abilities. It turns out there's a lot more to it. A great foreign film. Reaches on touchy subjects. Very honest and truthful.

If you are looking for GL action, then don't waste your time with this movie. However, if you are interested in the trials and tribulations of young girls dealing the hormonal changes in their bodies, then watch this movie.

Bubblegummer Marie is bored with childish best-buddy Anne and wants to hang out with the older girls on the school synchronized swimming team. Thanks to glamor-girl Floriane she becomes the team's mascot, but favors from Floriane carry a price. Much more honest about high school tensions than most movies I've seen, but I have strong mixed feelings about the last episodes of the story. Well-acted all through.
