George Roy Hill directed this original musical set the 1920s that mixes pop standards with new tunes written by Sammy Cahn and James Van Heusen. Julie Andrews, in a role that recalls her Broadway triumph in The Boy Friend, stars as Millie Dillmount, who comes to New York is search of a secretarial job and an unattached boss. She moves into a hotel for women, run by kindly Mrs. Meers (Beatrice Lillie), and she befriends the pretty, petite orphan Dorothy Brown (Mary Tyler Moore). Millie finds work with the handsome bachelor Trevor Graydon (John Gavin), but Trevor has his eyes on Dorothy. So too does Mrs. Meers, who despite her kindly exterior is actually an unscrupulous white slaver. Paper clip salesman Jimmy Smith (James Fox), on the other hand, pledges his undying love to Millie. One day, after attending a weekend party being given at the opulent Long Island mansion of Muzzy Van Hossmere (Carol Channing), Dorothy disappears. When Jimmy and Millie smell opium in Dorothy's room, they realize the awful truth about Mrs. Meers. Trying to rescue Dorothy and find the location of Mrs. Meers' hideout, Jimmy disguises himself as an orphaned woman and tries to get himself kidnapped. The scheme backfires, however, and Mrs. Meers drugs and kidnaps both Jimmy and Trevor. It is left to Millie to find the white slavers, free her friends from bondage and save the day. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

I couldn't get past the first hour of this movie. I just didn't get it. Clearly I need to try again and stick it out till the end.

Freaky Chinamen? Flappers sold into white slavery? Carol Channing shot out of a cannon? A beau scaling the outside of a NY skyscraper to stalk his girlfriend? Thank goodness for the all-star cast who made us stick with the movie. We trusted Julie Andrews and Mary Tyler Moore, so we allowed ourselves to suspend reality and "go with it." We were howling with laughter and enjoyed the wacky madcap adventures of these swell kids. Be sure to watch the credits at the end--the animated bouncing head of the pseudo-Chinese Mrs. Meers was the highlight of the movie! This movie was teriff. Corky!

I remember seeing this when I was a kid, and it was the first time I realized that a movie could make my stomach hurt from laughing so hard. It's been one of my favorites since!

I LOVE LOVE this movie! I always have...it used to play on the Disney channel when I was a kid and have had great appreciation for it ever since. I seriously considered not returning it. Watch it-it's a gas!

This movie is a gay romp in the flapper era, when women flaunted new freedoms. Julie Andrews shows brilliant facets of her personality that we never saw in Mary Poppins. Mary Tyler Moore's character doesn't have much range, but MTM plays her with perfect slow-witted sweetness. Carol Channing steals the show, and it's easy to see why she has a cult following. There are suggestions of hanky-panky, but it's all mild and well suited for family viewing.

"Thoroughly Modern Millie" is one of the most under-rated musicals. Julie Andrews was never more adorable and the songs are great. It is a really silly musical comedy about women being abducted and put into sex slavery, but it is done in a way that could still get a "G" rating. If you like musicals, you have to see this.

Thoroughly Modern Millie is a must see comedy musical about a young woman (Millie) in the 1920's who is determined to be a "modern" and marry a rich boss. Along the way, she makes friends, finds unexpected danger in thwarting a sinister slave trade, romance and adventure. Julie Andrews is wonderful and one of the few actresses that can sing and dance! Carol Channing, Mary Tyler Moore, James Fox, and John Gavin are also terrific! I highly recommend this film to all!
