The Thomas Crown Affair (1968)
Member Rating:
Thomas Crown (Steve McQueen) is a self-made Boston millionaire who masterminds a bank heist in hopes of leaving it all behind. Tired of being part of the Establishment, he has hopes of pulling off the caper and flying to Rio. Erwin Weaver (Jack Weston) leads the cast of crooks who never actually meet Crown but manage to pull off the robbery without a hitch. Crown deposits 3 million in a Swiss bank account, pays off the crooks, and waits for the insurance company to repay the bank for the loss. Eddy Malone (Paul Burke) is the savvy detective who helps insurance investigator Vicky Anderson (Faye Dunaway) find the mastermind behind the heist. Thomas Crown Affair became one of the first films to employ many split-screen images throughout its running time, as devised by editor Hal Ashby. Michel Legrand's score was nominated for an Academy Award, and the song The Windmills Of Your Mind, written by Legrand with Alan and Marilyn Bergman took home the coveted Oscar. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

I don't understand why people would give this movie a poor review because Blockbuster sent the wrong movie. Steve McQueen is great in this movie - the ultimate 1960's playboy! Faye Dunaway never looked better! The story will keep your interest all the way through. This movie exceeded my expectation.

What fun, still better than the remake! Steve McQueen rock. The chess game as foreplay is a classic!!!

Gotta love movies from the 60s. Multi-split-screen and everything. Reminds me of the film "Woodstock". Steve McQueen had Faye Dunaway fooled, lock-stock-and-barrel.

Very enjoyable movie with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway in their prime--fun to compare with the remake starring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo. Well worth watching for both the story as well as the interesting manner in which it is shot.

I expected a much better movie. This film was boring from start to finish. The plot was not particularly coherent, and the split-screen style of filmography used throughout the film was just plain annoying. The Pierce Brosnan remake is far superior to this original.

Sorry, but neither version is good ... bad story (truly not credible ... in any way); exaggerated acting (no likable characters in the bunch) ... weird climactic scenes that did NOT resolve the story .. at all ... this was just an exercise in "suckering" viewers into seeing a movie for the sake of seeing these actors.

Certainly, the heist is elementary and un-thrilling compared to today's action crime movies, particularly the Brosnan/Russo remake, which changes the cold cash motivations of robbing a bank to the delightfully playful theft of art. So, no cleverness in the crime. However, McQueen and Dunaway make up for it with mod-60s on-screen chemistry. Although sex and nudity were trimmed back for the '68 audience, innuendo prevails. The lovers steal the screen in this one. Great bank heists have to wait.

I haven't yet seen this movie. Regardless of whether you receive red or white dvd envelopes in the mail, the distribution centers have no problem sending you the 1999 edition instead of this one. I've been let down by both of these leading online dvd rental companies. Your experience might be different, of course. But, I'd recommend picking another movie if you appreciate the value of your time and online-rental dollar.

I rented this movie on accident trying to get the other version of the Thomas Crown Affair. This movie was horrible. I don't know what happened in the movie because I got irritated with the multiple screen shots in one. It was a new technology for them apparently so I guess they decided it must be every 5 minutes in the movie. I guess they thought, hey lets look high tech in this time and do something different but do it so many times that it is irritating. Don't waste your time on this movie, unless you lived in this era and haven't seen a movie since.
