John Carpenter wrote and directed this science fiction thriller about a group of aliens who try to take over the world by disguising themselves as Young Republicans. Wrestler Roddy Piper stars as John Nada, a drifted who makes his way into an immense encampment for the homeless. There he stumbles upon a conspiracy concerning aliens who have hypnotized the populace through subliminal messages transmitted through television, magazines, posters, and movies. When Nada looks through special Ray-Bans developed by the resistance leaders, the aliens lose their clean-cut "Dan Quayle" looks and resemble crusty-looking reptiles. Nada joins the underground, teaming up with rebel-leader Frank (Keith David) to eradicate the lizard-like aliens from the body politic. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi
This was a Cool move. I have watched it several times and it is one I try to get others to watch too. I was well worth Full price in the Theater to me and is definitely one you should rent. The only flaw in the movie is Roddy Piper. He is not the best actor but he did great with the part. Was not happy with the way it ended as there has never been another part and this is one of those movies that ends with something major affecting the world and I want to see what happens next. I give it 4 starts and would have been 5 Stars if the ending took you a bit further in to the events afterwards.
Conspiracy theorists, Sci Fi Fans, Wrestling Fans, and even some action fans will all like this movie.
They Live should be on a top 10 list of best sci-fi films ever made.Slow in the beginning, but with good purpose. When he puts on the x-ray like sunglasses you'll see something you would have never thought of.This film has a very important message that not all americans are aware of, yet it's around you 24/7. "They live, you SLEEP."
This movie seems very similar to the New World Order government that is being forced on us.The alien police in this movie resemble the obots of our police state.
Interesting as this movie was made back in the eighties.
Big disappointment..after all the good reviews..Myself + 2 others watched this and we must be missing something. About an 8 out 10 on the sleep-o-meter. Lack luster and uninteresting. If you liked Caprenter's the Thing don't bother with this one. Ridiculous, bad actiing, bad script and like another reviewer writes you keep waiting for something to happen...but zip.
Movie is worth seeing, but definitely not Carpenter's best. The suspense is there at the beginning, as per his usual style - but the movie derails somewhere along the way...right about the fight scene, I'd say...worth tossing into your rental queue though.
Like many of Carpenter's movies, you start out with an interesting idea but it never fully materializes in the end. Things just don't progress and you wait for something enlightening to happen, but it never does. And so goes, 'They Live'. BUT... there are classic moments in this movie, and it is worth the rent. And big street cred if you OWN it. Rowdy Roddy Piper has a 10+ min fight scene! It was so good they copied it in a South Park episode. Good social commentary, bad execution. Certainly no "Thing" or "Christine".
