The Tenant (1976) Reviews

The Tenant (1976)
Member Rating:
Director Roman Polanski casts himself in the lead of the psychological thriller The Tenant. Trelkovsky (Polanski) rents an apartment in a spooky old residential building, where his neighbors -- mostly old recluses -- eye him with suspicious contempt. Upon discovering that the apartment's previous tenant, a beautiful young woman, jumped from the window in a suicide attempt, Trelkovsky begins obsessing over the dead woman. Growing increasingly paranoid, Trelkovsky convinces himself that his neighbors plan to kill him. He even comes to the conclusion that Stella (Isabel Adjani), the woman he has fallen in love with, is in on the "plot." Ultimately, Polanski assumes the identity of the suicide victim -- and inherits her self-destructive urges. Some critics found the movie tedious and overdone; others compared it to Polanski's early breakthrough, Repulsion. The film was based on Le Locataire Chimerique, a novel by Roland Topor. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

For most, you either love Roman Polanski or you don't. If you are in the former group, you will enjoy this film, which has many elements that are shared in his other works. The pacing is slow but not boring, and the movie is quite lengthy at 2 hours. Polanski is perfect in the lead role; I cannot see anyone else doing it. This is a psychological film that forces the viewer to think about what is happening, and a second viewing will probably be needed to understand the nuances of the film.

Very slow, very creepy, and very enjoyable. Not for children.

While I agree with Aaron S. politically and morally, this is a place for movie reviews, not for reviews about the personal morality of the director or actors.

I rated this movie on it's own merit and not what the director did in his personal life because this is a movie review, with that being said this movie was a poor excuse for a horror movie, it did have some creepy moments and it is a psychological thriller but this movie was horrible the only thing I liked about was that girl from Nosferatu, Isabel Asjani other than that don't waste you time it is on YOU TUBE.

One of the scariest movies I have seen, and there is no blood, or pop up scares. Its built off of tension which no movie has done the last few years. I had to really think on what to give this as a rating because of the supporting cast, and the plot holes. And if you watch the movie its a huge circle that repeats itself but there are still plot holes, which made that confusing. This could have been a good movie and I think if that they do a remake it could have a lot of potential.

This amazing psychological thriller never got the recognition it deserved. A must see

Weird little flick about a guy who moves into a big old house split into appartments. Not much is explained here at all as to why certain events happen which I found to be annoying.

One of the stupidest movies I have ever seen (and I've seen a lot)

Some very well known actors in this film but they must have been desperate for money when they took part in this film.

In 1977 Roman Polanski was convicted of raping a 13 year old girl. He then fled the country to France, where he has lived without having to pay for his crimes. Since then he has been allowed to direct movies and profit from them. If you like raping 13 year old girls, then watch this movie, if you are a better person, then boycott it along with anyone else with a conscience.
