Black Beauty (1971)
Member Rating:
This internationally produced adaptation of Anna Sewell's Black Beauty is essentially a vehicle for Oliver star Mark Lester. The young Lester spends most of the film trying to reclaim his beautiful black horse, which passes through several hands over the course of 90 minutes. All the setpieces of the Sewell original are in attendance, including the showstopping "burning barn" sequence. Walter Slezak is the only truly recognizable actor in the film outside of Lester. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is definitely not rated G. It is too bloody and violent for children to watch. I put it on for my 4 year old and she was terrified. I just requested the 1994 version and hope it is better suited for younger viewers.

I was shocked an appalled by this film. If were rated today, it would be AT LEAST PG-13. It includes bloody scenes of men getting stabbed and shooting each other at point blank range, adults fist-fighting, a man and woman (fully clothed) rolling around on the ground kissing, and other men getting sauced and cavorting with prostitutes. Choose one of the other versions of Black Beauty, you could hardly do worse!

This movie is too dramatic for children. It includes scenes of war that includes killing and blood on swords. It is not adventurous or fun and should be re-rated for today's standards.
