Arthur Penn takes a crack at subverting the espionage film genre in Target. Walter Lloyd (Gene Hackman) is a quiet and unassuming lumberyard owner in Dallas, Texas. Chris (Matt Dillon) has dropped out of college to pursue a career as a race car driver. But all mundane tasks come to an end when Walter's wife Donna (Gayle Hunnicutt) is kidnapped while on a European trip. Walter flies to Paris with Chris to see what can be done. Once in Europe, Chris is shocked to discover that his dad was once a top CIA agent. Together, the two visit all of Walter's old CIA contacts in an effort to locate Donna. Finally, Walter discovers that Donna has been kidnapped by a rogue spy seeking revenge for an incident that happened eighteen years earlier. Now Walter must apply his old and vicious CIA tricks to save his wife from an old and vicious CIA operative. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

One of Gene Hackman's must see movie. I wasn't expecting much from this movie in the beginning but the twists and turns of the plot kept me glued to it. The title gave away the movie as just another spy thriller but it was not as predictable as I had thought.

Even though an older movie, still really, really good. Slow start, but necessary to build up to multi-level story line. Lots of action once the first 30min. has set the story line. Love it!!

Target is a great movie for its time. Acting is still good. Plot is entertaining. Not a wait of time.

At best, an OK movie...not spectacular. It was neat seeing Matt Dillon as very young man, but, the movie wasn't much to watch. JB

This was a good adventure film and espionage activities..a very young and boyish Matt Dillon really is the film besides the very active and competent actor Gen Hackman..I get a kick at seeing these actors in their prime and how or if they've improved..in the case of Dillon, this is certainly true..maturity does help but the boyishness is not hard to take,,3 stars!

I agree that Matt Dillon's acting skills left something to be desired in this movie, and I really like him but he came across as sort of clueless and stupid. Gene Hackman was great as usual and the story was fairly predictable. It was OK, though, not the best, not the worst, just so-so

Out of datestory but Gene did a fine job. Matt should have taken a few acting classes before taking this role.
