A struggling Los Angeles actor who has never fully grasped his Chinese roots takes an eye-opening journey to Shanghai after inheriting his grandmother's home in this romantic comedy starring X-Men: The Last Stand's Ken Leung and Heroes's cheerleader Hayden Panettiere. Liam (Leung) is an aspiring Hollywood star who spends the majority of time picking up bar girls with his best friend Joe -- a starving writer who has yet to pen a proper screenplay. While Liam does share an innocent relationship with precocious 16-year-old Adelaide (Panettiere), she often comes off as more mature than he and the age difference between the pair is far too glaring to ignore. Upon receiving notice that he has inherited his grandmother's home in Shanghai, Liam throws caution to the wind and purchases an airplane ticket. Shortly after landing in China, Liam becomes smitten with beautiful local Micky (Kelly Hu) and gradually learns to embrace his Eastern roots. But it's difficult to exist comfortably between two cultures -- much less two women -- and before long Liam finds that in connecting with the past, he is simultaneously laying the groundwork for his future. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The cast itself was actually delightful - the story boring beyond words. NEVER 'took off'' and grabbed my attention. I did not care what would happen next, nor how it would end. I finally started skipping ahead and STILL did not have any interest in the ending. Never finished watching it. Very disappointing.

are you kidding me this was not a comedy at all. it was slow and boring and i was grossed out by the fact that a man 12 years older was hitting on a 16 year old. i only rented it because hayden was in it.. and i love her.. but she was hardly in it.. dont bother!

Thinking this was going to be a low budget, independent film, it was a pleasant surprise to find that this was one of the best Asian-American themed films I've seen. If you liked the movie "Saving Face" you'll probably like this as they share a similar theme of American and Asian culture clashing. Every actor gave a genuinely believable performance. The acting, directing, writing, cinematography and sound were excellent. Of special note was how the camera lingered on great scenery with long takes. One of the deleted scenes is truly evil and should've been in the movie. The Dolby Surround 5.1 audio option made good use of surround sound. As for extras, there's a trailer for the film, a Commentary option with the writer, director and producer, a "Behind the Kiss: The Making of Shanghai Kiss" featurette (6:49 min), a "To Shanghai and Back: An Interview With Cast And Crew" featurette (9:31 min), a "Deleted Scenes" option containing five scenes and a "Still Gallery". Absolutely recommended.

The story started out weird and slow and i thought it was going to be another boring movie. This movie paints a good picture from an Asian American's perspective. Kelly Hu is gorgeous while Hayden did her part well with her innocent behavior. Eventually I was drawn into the story. I was pleasantly surprise. A good watch.

Great movie with asian guy in America and China roots perspective. Kelly Hu and Hayden were pretty good in the film, but in the end when Liam does goes for Hayden's innocent young character, she is probably legal by then. Overall the movie got me involved and kept wanting to watch.
