Taras Bulba (1962)
Member Rating:
The spectacular hordes of Cossack horsemen flying across the steppes to do battle with first one enemy and then another are the highlights of this otherwise thinly scripted costume drama set in the 16th century in the Ukraine. After the Cossack leader Taras Bulba (Yul Brynner) makes a pact with the Poles to join forces against the Turks and drive them from the European steppes, victory brings betrayal as the Poles then turn on their ally and force the Cossacks into the hills. From there, Taras Bulba decides that one of his sons, Andrei (Tony Curtis), will be sent to Polish schools to better learn the nature of their enemy. While away from home and hearth, the adult Andrei falls in love with a Polish noblewoman, Natalia (Christine Kaufmann, who would become the second Mrs. Curtis). As time progresses, the tensions between father and son, loyalty and love, ethnic identity and assimilation steadily increase until they end in tragedy. Taras Bulba was nominated for a 1963 Academy Award for "Best Music", scored by Franz Waxman. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

I truly loved the movie!! It is a great picture that includes the Cossak struggle, family ties and a good love story as well. If you like Yul and Tony, this is the movie for you.

One of the greatest movies of all time. Yul Brenner performance was great and story was also great.

This is an awesome movie. Whatever happened to the missing scene? When the cossacks arrive at Dubno a young women puts a wreath of flowers around Taras Bulbas neck - in the next scene the wreath is no longer there. I saw the movie when it was originally released - after the wreath is placed around Taras's neck, there is an extensive dialogue between Taras Bulba and the Polish Colonel - that part of the movie is missing - it jumps from wreath on neck to - I count only three regiments (the wreath is missing) ... If anyone knows the answer, please share. THANKS!

This movie has nothing in common with the book by Gogol except using the names of the characters. As long as you are not expecting that -It is a great movie and the hordes of horsemen were amazing. Love Yul Brenner. The gypsies at the Cossack camp are historically inaccurate, but hey this is Hollywood , why let a little fact get in the way of a good story

In some ways the acting was a little wooden at times.... but otherwise a good tale!

This movie has so much testosterone flowing that men will love it and women will swoon. Too many movies nowadays are either guy-flicks or chick-flicks. This movie is truly a his&hers! The days are when men died over honor (even if foolishly) and women were all too happy to wait for real men!

Just a bad movie. Terrible acting, even by Yul Brynner, who ordinarily pulls it out. Not worth watching!

When the music is by far the best thing (one of the few things) to recommend a film, all is not well. Yes Yul Bryner exudes his usual macho charm and Tony Curtis his considerable charm too. But it's far from enough. This seems to have been a botched film that they tried to fix up in the editing (there are 4 editors listed). There are obvious optical tricks to produce close-ups that were never shot, and the Cossack leader's dialog is all dubbed in by voice double-cartoon voicer Paul Frees, who also does the Orson Wells-like narration. The thrillilng, fast music that accompanies the frequent scenes of Cossack fighting prowess, seems to be working awfly hard to create excitement where there is little.
